Tag update

Postby PoGo » Tue Jan 29, 2013 1:16 pm

Hello,

I figured out that since the 0.7.19 release of MusicCabinet, when I change the tags into an album (track number, artist name, album name, ....), the modification in not taken into account after the tag update.
I have to manually rescan the library to make the change available.

Before this version, MusicCabinet was automatically rescanning the folder after the update to display the changes.

I'm quite impressed that you noticed. Earlier version automatically started scanning (offline scan) the directories containing changed files after a tag edit. At some point, I decided that this could be inefficient for somebody having a large library doing a lot of tag updates, as the scans aren't interrupted (if one scan is going on, further scans can't be started until the first one is finished). It would then be better to do all tag edits, and when finished hit the scan button.

So in the use case of changing something subtle in just one album, it used to be better before. For somebody with a large library doing multiple tag edits, it's better know (or at least less confusing). It's not really obvious which use case to support by default. (Maybe it should be an option: "try starting a scan immediately after tag updates")

Hi hakko !

I started to notice when I was doing the initial tag cleaning after I first installed MusicCabinet.
During a tag update if I notice that I was better to wait like 5sec after the end of the process and before clicking on "back".
Otherwise an error would be raised.
I checked the logs and saw that MusicCabinet was rescanning the folder in order to apply the changes right after the update.

I totally agree with that. Sometime I was so tired waiting between two tag update that I was tailing MusicCabinet's log file in order to detect the end of the automatic update. Then I could avoid the error message.
But in the other hand, for a minor change (like for a newly added album) it's really nice to have the changes automatically updated. I think that kind of option would be nice to have :)

My $02... why not put a checkbox next to the save button on the tag edit screen that says "scan this folder after save" or something like that?

And if you really want to get fancy, a user setting that sets the default value of that checkbox...

Just a suggestion,

Hey

Just noticed this behaviour aswell and its kinda giving me a headache as I dont know which albums I have already updated when modifying couple of them. I think the info in the DB should be correct at any point in time. Ie. if someone really wants it to updated once in a blue moon after changes are done, it should be an option to explicitly choose. Otherwise its useless for a quick tag fix to play nice with last.fm.
