last.fm does make use of it, and it's a feature i much appreciate.
it seems to automatically sort tracks scrobbled without album name under the right album in your stats only if you've scrobbled it "properly" before.
here's an example of that. if it's your first ever scrobble of a track, it remains albumless in your stats and as far as i know is never associated with any album by last.fm. if you're trying to keep track of which albums by an artist you've listened to and not just which track, it would be a very useful feature.
also, in the 'recently listened' section of your user page, tracks scrobbled along with album name are shown with the artist picture only while listening, and then with the proper album cover once the track is scrobbled.
