Two (probably dumb) questions

Postby Boutros » Thu Nov 08, 2012 9:31 pm

Hi Hakko -

I took the plunge and installed MusicCabinet - after our conversation here a couple of weeks ago, I did bite the bullet and spend a few hours updating my Album Artist tags anyplace they were incorrect, so my setup is looking pretty snazzy now. I'm really loving MC.

So, here are my questions (note I'm running this on a Windows 7 machine):

1) How do I update to the latest release? I know you say to replace the subsonic.war file, but my understanding (which may be flawed) was that that's for someone running a "proper" server (ie tomcat or somesuch). For a not-especially-bright Windows user like myself, do I need to just re-download the Windows installer and run it over the top of my existing installation?

2) Where do Playlists live within the MC UI? I have a playlist folder, and can add songs to the existing playlists that are there, but I have no idea how to PLAY those playlists from within MC.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for developing this awesome, awesome toy!

Cheers,

- Boutros

OK, scratch the second question - I realized that playlists are hiding under the "More Actions" dropdown. That seems like a mildly non-intuitive place for them, but... works for me.

Now if you can help me understand how to update to the latest release, I will be a truly happy camper :)

If feels good that I'm helping/forcing you to clean up your tags! I do like well tagged music collections.

You could update to the latest version either way. Download the Windows installer and run it on top of your current install, and it'll replace your old build with the new one. Or, if you prefer, just download the subsonic.war file and replace your current one in Program Files/Subsonic (or where your install is). Then stop/start the service. The outcome will be just the same no matter which way you choose. (You can think of the file called subsonic-booter-something.jar as your server, btw.)

I'm not the designer behind the UI.. that's the work of Sindre. Not that I would have done it much better, though.

Huzzah! Thanks for the quick reply, and the confirmation, and the free education!

Gotta say, I thought I would never warm up to the tag-based browsing, but now that I've put in the time to fix the Album Artist tags, it's growing on me.

Great, great work, and many thanks.
