is it the right time to install MusicCabinet?

Postby mea » Sat Jan 18, 2014 1:21 pm

Hello Hakko !

I am running subsonic 4.9 b.4 under osx and I would like to install music cabinet asap.
But I have 3 questions :

1. How do music cabinet handle the future updates of subsonic ? By this I mean, can I still upgrade subsonic in parallel to the music cabinet plugin install ?
2. is the latest version of subsonic supported ? (4.9b.4)
3. because of the high number of osx users around, do you consider creating a pkg installer to make things easier ? maybe a single package containing latest subsonic versions + MusicCabinet? Would be great !

Thank you very much !!!

Music Cabinet doesn't appear to have any support but I still prefer it over Subsonic and Madsonic. At some point Madsonic may add ARTIST Radio and links to related artists with bios and photos. Until then Musiccabinet works fine. It is stable, fast and the database seems much less problematic than the other options.

Development stopped last March but it still works for me and my users. It would be great to see someone continue development but it is a great app as is. If you need to stream video Madsonic or Subsonic is the way to go.

edit - spelling

Hi there !

Thank you for your kind replies.
It true that the postgresql DB must be a lot faster that the piece of crap delivered by default with subsonic...
The ideal solution would be to be able to choose to use a sql DB and see subsonic include features like :

- last.fm artist info
- possibility to "love" tracks on last.fm directly from the subsonic interface
- and so on

what a pitty MusicCainet seems to be abandonned :(

To be fair I never had any problems with Subsonic 4.6 but I would prefer to use tags verses folder structure . I never upgraded to 4.7. Based on comments it appeared many had some issues so I held off. Then Music Cabinet came on the scene . My small user community loved the change and usage tripled. The Dsub app works well with Music Cabinet.

I am planning to give Madsonic a second look to serve up my videos.

If you don't mind installing a dormant solution I suggest giving Music Cabinet a try.

Hi,

I followed hakko tutorail and got musiccabinet to load.
But I'm stuck with postgresql right now.

First of all I tried to follow this tutorial to install it using macports :

http://dsync.blogspot.nl/2012/10/tutori ... sonic.html

but I get several errors:

I can even create the database...I get the following error after I paste the first db creation command line :
mkdir: /opt/local/var/db/postgresql92: No such file or directory

I see that there is a postgresql.app available that seems to run without the need to install the app using macport...I think it is convenient...I installed it... and I'm able to access it using the psql92 command.

I launch musiccabinet, enter "postgres" as username and get "wrong password".

Do anyone know a way to make postgresql.app work with musiccabinet ?
If not, Do anyone have an up to date postgresql install tutorial with command lines that works for installing it Under osx10.9 ?

thanks for your replies !

ok I found this tutorial :
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-add- ... r-account/

I created a database called musiccabinet
I created a user called postgres
and the user has a password "postgres"
and I granted him all privilèges on the database musiccabinet...

Now when I start musiccabinet it tells me the database was upgraded, I click on the button and I get this error :

permission denied to create extension pg_trgm : hint : must be superuser...

any idea ? :(

Sounds like Linux to me ... log on as root?

Do you do the Sudo that you do so well?

Sorry, I'm a Windows guy, but I think that's what they're getting at.

oh man i made a little alter user postgres with superuser and it seems it's runnning now !

I still have two problems :

musiccabinet tells me lame is not installed but it is present in the encoder folder...any idea ?

When I click on "configure your last.fm account" I just have a blank screen...nothing more. I suppose this could become problematic as I installed musiccabinet for this specific use ! :/

That's one of the issues with installing an abandoned mod. Once users realize that there won't be any further development most migrate to something that's currently active as interest falls off.

Music Cabinet is a fine mod, but once the developer disappears it's hard to get answers. As far as I know there isn't any reason this won't work if it's set up properly, but not being a Linux expert I don't have the expertise to solve issues I've not seen before. The OSX base is probably smaller than the Linux base, so there aren't that many OSX users around using MC.

As I was reading your posts. the one thought that crossed my mind was that it takes a long time for MC to sync the last.fm data. Depending on the library size and your connection speed, this can take several hours, during which time it may appear that the program is frozen. I don't know if that applies in your case, but it is a possibility.

Thanks for your answer ! ;)
Actually it seems my collection is way too big...I took some time to monitor all logs...and even after 6 hours, nothing more happened.
I have another issue with last.fm, it just dont scrobble anything. (because it seems there is no way to use last.fm API from a framed window...weird).

SO...I decided to give a shot to madsonic, as far I can see the roadmap announces a LOT of new features and last.fm integration seems to be one of devlopers priority.
I hope things like "loved / starred" songs syncing will be implemented soon. as well as related artists etc.

Anyway, madsonic seems to be the most reasonable way to go for now.
it's scanning my collection for...10 hours now...I'll assume I4ll be able to give it a first user shot in the afternoon...

My first concern is that I used isub this morning, after configuring my last.fm account, and the tunes in cache are not scrobled as they were using SS...I hope this will be fixed / fixable after the scan is finished...

I'll keep you updated !

I have several servers, so I use both Madsonic and Subsonic. I like both because they allow me to listen to whatever I want without anything tracking what I'm doing, so for me the last.fm features aren't a big deal for me, but I do know that there is a section for last.fm setup in the settings in Madsonic.

Scanning will vary in time with size and hardware power. Right now I'm a little over 365GB but on my primary array it only takes about 15 mins to scan. I think drive speed is the biggest factor.

Madsonic has a lot of cool features that have not been added to Subsonic and for the most part is very stable. I've seen a few bug reports on the last beta, but the 5.0 final hasn't had many issues. Once you get it up and running and the scan is done I think you'll like what you see.
