I don't see an option to play only when fully cached? Am I missing something?

Also, does enabling this option affect video streaming? Of course I wouldn't want to wait for my video to be fully cached before playing...

Not sure about video, but in the latest version of DSub, setting that value to zero causes playback to start only when the current track has been fully cached.

It's called "Buffer Length" under Playlists in settings and it has the comment next to it: (0 = when fully cached).

If someone has a better name besides Buffer Length let me know. I just couldn't think of a short description that would make it obvious what it does.

I'm going to post this reply to ar9 here instead because it is more related to DSub specifically then Subsonic as a whole:

1) I'm not sure why it seems to be such a big deal for some people in the first place. I mean really, it pauses once, maybe twice for like 1/4 of a second and then continues, and only on the first song. Yes annoying, but some seem to be treating it like the end of the world.
2) As far as I can tell it has been happening because in JB the MediaPlayer object I use was changed so that it tries to buffer the entire song (or at least way more then before) while playing. Before it would just try to buffer a small portion of it. This makes it so that while it is still downloading it reaches the end of the file, then figures that is the end of the song, so stops trying to buffer. This means that it reaches the "end" of the song at whatever point it was downloaded to when it starts playing. This is what makes it seem like it is stuttering a couple of times. I keep trying different things but nothing I do seems to completely get rid of the underlining problem. I am going to keep trying, but that brings me to #3
3) I have very limited time, and there is probably a good 40-hours a week, years worth of work I can do on this project. The major features each takes weeks of time to work on, and even the little features that people want implemented take a significant portion of my time. Add to that that everyone thinks that what they want done is the most important thing and that I should just drop what I'm working on to work on what they want first...well it's hard to always prioritize what I should work on first. Fixing this issue is just one request of dozens, and not everyone is going to share your priorities.

Anyways, just in case I didn't say it before...

I'm very pleased with how the buffer length option works. As far as I'm concerned, the problem is now solved. :P

@daneren: i get your frustration, i only hope it doesn't start deter you from wanting to work this project anymore because you've done a great job improving the android app. subsonic is one of my most frequently used pieces of software and i'm sure that is the case for most people on here. i think because of that people get feisty over things they have no business getting feisty over. hopefully you know most of us empathize with you despite not really being able to help you in any way, haha. all we can really do is send you ideas/suggestions and hope they interest you.

as far as that specific bug goes, it doesn't surprise me that some people think it's an awful bug (i fall in this category) and others are completely apathetic to it. i'm the type of person who tweaks my tv settings until i feel the contrast and color and everything looks "perfect" for my room lighting. i turn to my girlfriend and ask her what she thinks and she says, "it always looked fine to me... you're the one that cares about that stuff" haha. i'm really particular about my music and hearing the stutter makes me die a little inside. i certainly don't think it's your duty to fix it though. and i also understand that if you don't particularly care about the bug you won't (and shouldn't) be highly motivated to fix it when there are other features you're more interested in.

anyway... check out the JB mod thread that archrival has started. he seems to understand how to fix the problem by using an http streaming solution.

Yep I just saw that. I will have to try merging those fixes into my branch. It seems like it isn't 100% working so I will have to make my own changes, but that is alright :D

I'm not going to hold my breath, but it would be awesome if this changelog for 4.2.2 was a fix for this issue:

"Stop caching stream duration, it might change (increase) dynamically."

Then again as my only JB device is my Nexus 7, so it would make it impossible for me to test future fix attempts :(
