DSub Stopping / Crashing?

Postby NoahJenda » Wed Oct 28, 2015 9:39 pm

I'm having a weird problem with DSub today.

Whatever I try to listen to, whether on WiFi or using my mobile data, I can only play about five or ten minutes of music before DSub just stops. I'm not sure if it's crashed or not. It does still show on my list of recent apps, and if I reopen it, I can pick up where I left off. However, it will stop playing again five or ten minutes later.

I've verified that my server is up and working fine, and I've not had this issue with any of the other Android Subsonic apps I have.

Is there something I should tweak in the DSub settings?

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Sounds like Android might be kicking Dsub out of memory. What phone do you have? Did you recently get an Android update? Did you recently install a new app? Are you using the phone when this happens? What app?

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S6 running Android 5.1.1

When this happens, the phone is sitting on my desk doing nothing. I'm not actively doing anything else with the phone other than listening to music.

Today, I cleared the cache and data from DSub and set it up again from scratch. So far, it's working fine without stopping or crashing. If it continues this way, I'll consider the issue resolved even if I'm not entirely sure what caused the problem.

I take it back. I'm still having problems with DSub stopping randomly.

Currently, it's playing 10 seconds of music, stopping for about a minute, playing another few seconds of music, stopping again, etc.

I have logged into my Subsonic server via the web interface and confirmed that everything is working normally. I have no trouble streaming music via my PC.

I've closed all running apps on my Samsung Galaxy S6. It does not show DSub as still running, but the "play" icon is still shown in my notification try and it's still starting / stopping as described.

I finally got it to stop playing by opening the app again (even through it wasn't shown as currently running) and selecting "exit" from the menu.

Anything I can tweak in the settings so this doesn't keep happening?

I can get DSub to crash very regularly if I'm playing music and then try to use Chrome to do some browsing. Facebook is very reliable in this regard.

I am doing some work on responding to low memory events so that should help not being killed in the background. I'm not sure why some people are though because I use it on a G6 as well and am unable to get it to kill the process even using Chrome and a bunch of other apps.

I QA an android app for my job. Something we've noticed is that a lot of older phones that have gotten Android updates, even those that have what should be a sufficient amount of RAM, and especially those that are stuck on 5.0.x rather than 5.1 or 6 are much more aggressive when pruning apps from memory, in a bad way. Some particularly bad examples are most older Samsungs (S4s for sure, not sure about S5s off the top of my head), older Motorolas (2013 X is hit very hard with this) and the LG G2 (though not as bad as the others mentioned).

Nexuses are (of course) fine, even after updates, even if you force them on to the 5.0.x builds that cause problems on other phones. New flagships that have been updated from other manufacturers also seem fine, but that falls off fast.

I have a first gen Moto G with 16MB that hasn't gotten the Lollipop update yet.

If anyone is on the Beta and able to reproduce this issue do you mind testing this?
