I can't figure out how the heck it is supposed to work. My previous attempt didn't seem to work. If you have an example of an existing app where it does work I can try to figure out how it works from that.

As a reminder to all those looking for AVRCP that are on a Nexus device or running android 4.2+ the metadata portion wont be available until android 4.3 (API 18). I miss AVRCP in Cyanogenmod so much :/ here is looking foreward to CM 10.2 :)

I was kind of surprised that the CM devs weren't able to port the changes over to the new bluetooth stack in 4.2

What finally fixed this for me is the Android 4.4 update. I have a Galaxy S III and DSub playing on a 2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring (with touchscreen Bose audio head). I tried all the fixes here with very limited success. After the Android 4.4 push, all the metadata began working perfectly, including album, song, artist, track and elapsed time. Unusually, I had the chance to replicate this. My phone broke after the 4.4 update, so I purchased an identical refurbished Galaxy S III. It shipped with Android 4.3 and you have to wait for a random push of 4.4, which didn't occur until 10 days after I activated it. During those 10 days, I was back to buggy bluetoooth metadata transmission (only song/artist/album data for the song that happened to be playing when the car turned on a blink when the track changed, but no change in displayed metadata when the track changed. Elapsed time stuck at 0). After the Android 4.4 push on my second phone, bluetooth metadata worked perfectly.

Hopefully other phone/car combinations will also be fixed with Android 4.4.

I'm also experiencing the issues in Bluetooth where the song timing data is not always updated on my head unit (a Pioneer X3500BHS). It does always get updated when I download/cache my files with D-Sub and then open them up and play them through either Google Play Music or Neutron Music Player so it appears to be something with D-Sub. It's also only song timings (both amount played and amount to go) that aren't updated properly.
