Icons, symbols and workflow...

Hi,

Ive been testing Subsonic on my QNAP NAS for a week or two with DSUB. I love them.. Its got me back into my music collection.

Now I might sound dumb here so forgive me but...

Whats the difference between Download and Cache? (told you it was dumb)

When I select a tune from say HOME > RANDOM > The drop down menu offers Cache and Download. Hmmmm which one?

If there is an Orange star next to a track I assume its downloaded to my device? so when I go offline its there?

If I select PlAY NOW. It doesn't. What plays is a track already in the current playlist. I have to select PLAY NEXT (or LAST) to get it into the Playlist. Is this correct?

STAR im ok with...

I'm just trying to understand a better workflow and understating of whats going on.

Sorry for sounding dumb. I'm not really!!!

Thanks all

Del

No - it's not you. I use 3 different apps and they all have their own little differences, but the app streams the music to the phone and stores it in a cache that's defined in the app settings regarding size and bitrates, storage location, songs to preload, etc.

i don't remember what all the stars and colors mean on each app as my phone has tons of storage and I keep my cahe size at 20GB so that there's always enough music on the phone when I'm not getting a good 3g connection.

For less capable phones these things may have relevance, but as I recall - download means that you download the music (probably to a storage location other than the cahce), for music in the cache you can pin tracks so that they are not automatically deleted when the cache needs more room to store currently playing music. Unpinned tracks in the cahe will be deleted as needed once the cache is full.

The color codes for each app should be explained in each forum, but I don't know where they are in each one.

I have noticed the same thing, which I believe is a bug. "Play Now" used to add the song to the playlist and then start playing it right away. Now "Play Now" just starts the current playlist playing, without adding the track to the playlist.

Definitely a bug.

Does play now not work everywhere or only certain places? I wasn't aware it wasn't working as I use it all the time.

"Play Now" indeed only plays a track already in the playlist, however, pressing "Play Now" again actually starts playing the track immediately. The Android version of a double-click perhaps?

Sorry folks... not to confuse things, but I didn't realize this was a dSub discussion... I am experiencing the same issue with the vanilla Android Subsonic app.

Well that's fine I'm perfectly willing to fix bugs that effect both stock and dsub :)

I believe this is a similar issue so I am posting it here:

When one goes into one of the subsections of the Home tab (I'm going to use Recently Added as my example but I assume this happens in the other subsections also), the only menu item available is Shuffle. If I press shuffle at this point, it empties my playlist and then informs me the playlist is empty. What I would expect to happen is for it to shuffle all of the albums it is currently showing in Recently Added.

I see play refresh and shuffle which is the same as on any list of albums so that is correct. But Yah I just tried them out and neither play or shuffle actually appear to work ill have to investigate that.

I use the Subsonic, Dsub, and the Madsonic app. All 3 exhibit the same behavior. Methinks the problem is rooted in the original Subsonic app code that is causing the problem.

I don't think this was happening with ICS on my S3, it only started when I moved to Jelly Bean. This has been an annoying yet recurring theme every time Android is upgraded.

Additionally, there are issues whenever I play a video that is shorter than one minute. Those videos always seem to stop before the end. Going back a few versions of Subsonic, it seemed that there were issues regarding track length measurement that apparently have never been corrected.

Seems strange that this would be such a problem, but I'm not a programmer so I'm sure there are difficulties that I'm unaware of. In any event it would be great if anyone could identify a fix. I'd be happy to donate to anyone who does find and fix this problem.

I want to say thanks to the developer, I purchased the app from the play store and am very happy with it.

I'm still not clear on the 'download vs cache' difference in Dsub. I am using the latest 3.8.3

I see that if I select 'download' it will show an orange star next to the track. If I select 'cache' it will show a green star. Both end up in the same folder. Also during normal playback operation, the next 3 songs are copied to my device and show an orange star.

Now my questions are, does the 'cache size' apply to one or both? If I want a set of songs to not be remain on the device, should I select 'cache' or 'download'? Can I set my 'cache size' low so the revolving cache (whatever that is called) will remain small, but I would still be able to keep some songs always on the device? Is either of the 'cache' or 'download' dynamic in that it will stay up to date with my library? What I mean by that is if I change a song name or modify a playlist will that automatically be 'cached' or 'downloaded' to the device?

Thanks in advance for the help. I searched the forum and this thread was the closest I came to the answer but it is still not clear to me.

Basically the only difference between cache and download is that things which are labelled as cache are never going to be removed from your phone without you explicitly deleting it (either from a file browser or through the app -> delete). Download, just playing and letting it download, and any other way of downloading a song is eligible for deletion once you start getting past the max cache size (whatever it is set at in the settings). While cached songs count towards that total, they are not eligible to be deleted when trying to free up space.
