I finally got DSub 3.8.5 working on my SIII. I'll briefly post what went wrong and how I finally fixed it just in case anyone else has the same problem I did.
First, the problem wast that DSub was apparently starting up the "Media" application, which was eating up CPU cycles and running down the battery in just a couple of hours. This was happening even after DSub was exited. On top of that, DSub was freezing my phone to where I had to remove the battery and reboot.
At first I installed 3.8.5 over an earlier DSub version, but that didn't work. I downloaded both Sindre's Android app, as well as Supersonic. Neither interacted properly with Bluetooth, so I ditched them but did not uninstall.
Finally, I removed all three apps and then re-installed only DSub, version 3.8.5. After reinstalling, all the problem seem fixed. So in the end, I think if you are having problems with your SIII and DSub, uninstall all Android SubSonic clients and then reinstall 3.8.5. That worked for me.
