Music Not Showing Up

Postby nelson33 » Fri Jun 04, 2010 5:05 pm

I recently purchased a desktop pc to use as a media center in my living room and, because it would likely always be on, I decided to move my Subsonic server to that computer. I have been using Subsonic for sixth months without any problem.

All of my music is saved on my external HD, so I just decided to start from scratch on the new computer. I first uninstalled Subsonic from my laptop where it was running previously, and installed the most recent copy from this website onto the desktop pc. I followed the setup instructions, reregistered my server as I had previously donated, and added the filepath for my music on the external HD, but nothing showed up.

I changed the filepath to another folder, on the internal HD, which has a couple .mp3s in it and it did not show anything there either. I tried adding an erroneous filepath (one that does not exist) and it displays a message asking me to add a folder. This means it has access to the directory but for some reason still will not populate.

I have also been using the Android app on my Droid. I can connect to the server, but I am not seeing any music there either. I even changed the drive letter and updated the filepath and still nothing. All ports have been opened on the right IP and the program has been allowed through firewall.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I'm stumped and really disappointed because I have not found anything else that compares to Subsonic. I mainly use it just to cue up downloads on the go, as I enjoy listening to the file and not true "streamed" content and my music changes daily.

Please respond to this post with any suggestions. I will try anything. Feel free to ask me any questions about my setup, I tried to be as detailed as possible.

Have you tried the Getting Started docu?

Also, have you looked at the log?

If you have don the a bow, with no results, you need to tell a little more
about the system you are running on.

I'm only new to subsonic but first thing that jumps to mind is the listing of Music Masks .mp3 .wma .oog etc in the General settings to say what formats are to be read.
If you add .doc it will list .doc files though you cant play them ;-/
Anyway if you dont have .mp3 you wont see .mp3s

Its a shame you uninstalled the old one so fast as you could compare the setup. Perhaps try reinstalling on the old laptop to see if it picks up the settings again.

Just my 10 cents.

Yes, I have seen and followed to a tee that document. I am also very familiar with the way Subsonic operates and have a lot of experience tweaking the settings to get it to work properly.

As far as my system goes. I WAS running it on a Sony laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate 32. The new PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64. No special servers or anything like that, I have been happy with it so far.

As far as the masks go, .mp3 does appear as the first one. Like I said, I have received NO error messages. My Android app connects to both the ip/port combination and the registered domain. The files just do not show up.

I am also sure it is not my harddrive or folders because I have other programs (WMP, iTunes, WMC, VLC) all running off the same directories with no problem. Why then does it not show up?

I only UNISTALLED Subsonic from the laptop. I still have the folder with all settings, etc. Will that help me? I did not have anything special set up before, though. When I first set it up all I had to do was add the directory and forward port 80 through my router and allow the program through my firewalls.

Has anyone else had any issues like this? or any advice?

Can you connect to subsonic from a browser on the subsonic Windows 7 PC?
Even if you dont see the music from the PC.

Can you upload a file (mp3) to a folder (incoming) in the music share with the other music?

Can you see that uploaded file in the folder and then can you see it in the browser accessing subsonic?

Is it possible to share a folder out from the other laptop and set up subsonic to share out an mp3 from that. ( just to see if it is some sort of permissions problem on the desktop !)

If you install subsonic on the old laptop again is it responding the same?

Something would suggest its a permissions issue but I'm not familiar with Windows 7 yet.

Just another 10 cent. it might help you bump into the solution.

I think you meant that to be funny but...

It's not true. My subsonic is configured to transcode .txt and .doc files to audio and read them to me.

Heres the transcode line I used.

txt > wav | txt | wav | text2wave %s -o - | lame -b %b - -

With that, I can indeed "play" my text files.

!! OMG ( to use a silly term)
I never could have guessed.
Ya I was being light hearted at least. But that is cool. I'm glad I just donated to this really fantastic tool.
Thanks for the transcode info.

I wonder if nelson33 has had any luck with his set up!?

I was having a similar problem after a move to windows 7. I had put my music in the Public music folder so I could access from any device connected to my network. Windows lists the Public music folder as "Public Music" under "\Users\Public\" but when connected by SMB on another machine, the music folder is simply called "Music".

I updated my path to reflect "Music" instead of "Public Music" and it populated subsonic.
