Error: 'Couldn't load main class' on install (Windows Vista)

Hi,

I'm brand new to Subsonic (and streaming in general). Looks great though, can't wait to get it working. Discovered it through the Mediamonkey add-on list.

I'm trying to use Subsonic on a Windows Vista 32-bit machine, installed using the Windows Installation method (subsonic-4.2-setup, to be exact).

The installation appears to complete fully (ie: I get the wizard completion window, I can click the 'finish' button, the program is put in the start menu), but I also get an error caption box stating 'Couldn't load main class'.

This error appears at the very end of the installation, when the loading bar in the second-last wizard window is almost complete.

The service does not start. It does not appear in the system tray. It is listed as a Windows Service but when I manually start it, it stops immediately, with the following error message: 'The Subsonic service on the Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs'.

Any ideas?

It's not easy to tell what went wrong in your particular install, but it's easy enough to redo. Just delete the Subsonic directory. Check to make sure you have the latest version of Java. Then reinstall Subsonic making sure to right click on the setup file and choose "Runas Administrator" to do the install.

We have lift off! Sorted.

Turns out my Java install was corrupt somehow, but I didn't know until I tried to run an Java update (which didn't work). Had to completely remove Java and reinstall. Easy.

I don't think I would have figured that out by myself though.

Yeah, I'd seen that tutorial before. Now Subsonic is installed I'll use it to set the thing up.
