Popping noises

Postby rmoess » Tue Nov 20, 2007 8:51 pm

Hello, I have moved my Music folder to a USB drive so that I could remove the drive and connect it onto an other PC if I wanted to. It appears that, since then, I get a lot of popping noises when I connect via the Internet to my Music folder, using Subsonic 3.2 build 476. I am only using Subsonic as a media streamer, and I do not know that this has anything to do with Subsonic per say, but if someone has had the same kind of problem (popping sounds, crackling noises...) and has a solution that would be great!!! I am using the latest Arch Linux on a decent PC with 1GB of RAM. The USB drive is a 300GB formatted with the reiserfs format, and is connected to a 2.0 USB port. Could it be the fact that the drive is a USB device? Does this have something to do with transfer rate or speed? The music files are a mix of .ogg and mp3 files. Thank you for the help... Roland

I think it has to be specific to your config. I run CentOS 5 linux with a 500 GB USB2 drive and I don't have those issues even when transcoding 320Kbps MP3s to 96 Kbps MP3s for streaming.

My machine is a P4 2.6ghz with Hyperthreading with 1 GB of ram, JBOSS is set to use a max of 512 MBs.

My USB filesystem is EXT3...nothing special.
