Search Issue

Postby ebasta » Wed Apr 06, 2011 7:37 pm

I have an album called "Latin A-Go-Go". When I search for the album it doesn't show up in search results. I've tried many iterations of search terms including "Latin", "A-Go-Go", "Latin Go", "Go Go", "Go", etc. Nothing, but some other albums with "Latin" and "Go" are included. But if I search for "Gomez" (the artist's last name) it shows up fine. I've rebuilt the search index many times. There are other examples with different albums but this is the latest. Any suggestions?

you're lucky. I get this:

Error

Subsonic encountered an internal error. You can report this error in the Subsonic Forum. Please include the information below.

I am brand new to Subsonic--just installed it last night--and am a long time Ampache user. The interface for Subsonic is winning me over, but I too have been experiencing search issues, as well as instability issues, which are giving me pause.

For example, I have The Pacific soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, et al. When I search for "pacific," I get no results. When I search for "zimmer," two of his albums appear--though I have about ten.

Thinking it might be a tagging issue, I went into each album and double checked the album titles, track names, etc., using the Subsonic tag editor. So far so good. I even played the entire album, thinking it might be an issue with the files themselves; they play just fine.

I started digging through the settings--again, I'm new here--and found the Search options. I tried reindexing the search, and here are the results of my log:

Still no joy. Any idea what is going on? It also has a tendency of getting crashy during indexing.

I'm new to Subsonic and I'm getting the exact same problem. Search returns nothing.

I'm using Subsonic 4.4 (build 2169) – February 6, 2011 - jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_17, Linux (60.5 MB / 81.8 MB) - on a CentOS box.

It seems that the index file is being built.

Code: Select all
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 17784118 Apr 11 10:03 subsonic13.index

I've had to do some things manually like creating a "/var/playlists" folder to match the default. Do I need to do something manually for the search to work?

It's a shame because Subsonic seems to be quite a promising solution for me.

It's fixed. I've done several changes for several reasons but I think the one that made the difference is that I upped the "--max-memory=" parm in the /etc/sysconifg/subsonic file to a very high number.

I was goofing around just trying to find the performance impact Subsonic has on my server by adding a second path to my music folder, effectively doubling my file count. Of course, Subsonic died at login. I upped the max-memory amount to 4 times the original, Subsonic started up, I removed the second path, restarted Subsonic again and (for giggles) tested the search. The search worked. I've reduced the max-memory back to my original setting and the search feature still works.

I hope that helps someone else.

I can verify that EasilyOdd's suggestion seems to have resolved my problem as well. My default value (in /etc/default/subsonic on Ubuntu) for --max-memory was set to 100, so I upped it to 240 (twice the reference in the comments). I rebuilt my index and can now search for everything.

I'll post an update if I run into problems.

Good deal! Just for future reference, I originally configured --max-memory at 120 and increased it to 480. I'm going to set it a bit higher (200) for normal running purposes. I still need to do some research on the impact this setting has overall while still letting everything work.

It's always nice to just stumble into a solution. Thanks for verifying Jägs.

Well, I'm still having search problems, but it may be my expectation, rather than a problem with Subsonic, so if someone could confirm this, I would appreciate it.

So, I upped the memory limit to 480 MB, so that should be plenty of memory. After I run the search indexing, my log reports that it has been successfully created:

Code: Select all
[2011-04-16 16:26:06,299] INFO SearchService - Created search index with 52000 entries.
[2011-04-16 16:26:07,895] INFO SearchService - Updating Lucene search index.
[2011-04-16 16:26:15,119] INFO SearchService - Created search index with 52165 entries.

Upping the limit on memory seemed to help this process, as my original search terms are returning results.

That said, I have many compilation albums of film music, as well as soundtracks--and other compilations for that matter--with different artists on the same album. My expectation is that, as these are set in the tags of the FLACs/MP3s, doing a search on one such artist would have his/her name return in the "Artists" category in the search results. Some do return in the "Songs" category, however.

The reason this is important at this point is that I am using iSub on my iPhone, where I can only search by Artist, Albums or Songs. It seems counterintuitive to search for songs by a given artist using the Songs option.

Also, in many of my Classical FLACs--and the occasional MP3--is that I have the composer in the Composer field, as opposed to the Artist field, where the actual performer is listed (e.g. Berliner Philharmonic (Artist), Ludwig van Beethoven (Composer)). Is this supported.

Thanks!

Sorry to bump this, but does anyone have any suggestions here? I've noticed others have had similar search issues, but I've not seen any resolution to said issues.

I would like to keep using Subsonic--and ultimately donate--but if I cannot adequately search through my collection of 50,000+ songs, I need to go back to Ampache.

Yeah, the Subsonic search seems to be a bit basic. The results returned in Subsonic for compilation or "Various Artist" album don't seem to return the Album Artist tag even though it searches through the Album Artist tag. I too would like the see a composer search. I've had to include the composer in the Artist tag and re-tag my classical collections.

Have you tried the iSub forum at isub-app.org? I don't know of that forum's quality, but you might get an answer. I also have problems with iSub artist/album/song and folder searches. I've seen errors in the subsonic_sh.log file after trying an iSub search, but haven't taken the time to figure out what they mean.

Here are my subsonic_sh.log entries that come from an iSub artist search that works in Subsonic, but not in iSub.

Just for reference, it's for an artist that has only 2 tracks in my collection. They are single tracks in 2 separate Various Artist releases.

I still have all of my compilation albums in a Various Artists folder. That VA folder is at the same level as my single artist folders. Yeah, I'm still on the fence about redoing my folder structure.
