Can't access from outside LAN

Postby tismon » Tue Apr 19, 2011 2:03 pm

Problem Description: Can stream fine while within my LAN, but can't access anything from outside
Troubleshooting Steps: Port forwarding is setup correctly on port 5671 (manually and set as so in the subsonic settings) and canyouseeme can in fact see me. I've looked over the tutorials just in case, but nothing's helped yet. I set a static IP for my computer in my LAN about 2 weeks after installing, but I'm not sure if I have to update something on subsonic's end.

I'm not too sure where to go from here. I'd definitely donate if this proves to be something reliable once it's setup.

Thank you for any help.

Most problems are due to improper setup on the router. Setting a fixed internal ip address for the server and proper port forwarding rules on the router are essential for long term stability.

Never use port 80 or 443 - ISP's often use or block them and these are also the default ports on WHS for the remote login page. 8080,8081, work fine. 808X always works. I've seen others use different port numbers that have caused install failures.

READ: http://monroeworld.com/android/subsonic/ This is the Windows tutorial but most of the concepts apply to any setup. Specific setup instructions for other Operating Systems are available in the Tutorials section. http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=6 and on the Subsonic website at http://www.subsonic.org/pages/installation.jsp

In Subsonic Settings/Network - UNCHECK " Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic (using UPnP or NAT-PMP port forwarding)." make sure to hit the SAVE button, you may have to scroll down to see it depending on your screen size. UPnP or Plug & Pray works sometimes, but not very often and you're better off learning what's going on anyway. You're dipping your toe into the network mgmt. thing anyway, might as well learn what's going on as home networks don't get simpler as time goes on. As your network gets more complex, you're going to have to learn this stuff! No time like the present.

Manually assign a fixed intenal IP and static route to your server at the upper end of the address range of the router, out of the way of DHCP, e.g. 192.168.1.254

Set up your router manually. uPNP might work, but most often it doesn't. Learing how to do it will be a skill you'll love having as your network grows.

Check the Subsonic Control Panel to make sure it's using the right port you're going to use. I typically use 8080 - 440, 8081 - 441, etc.

Set up port forwarding in your router to direct traffic on the selected port to your server. Consult your router documentation to do this, they are all a bit different.

Learn your external IP address assigned by your ISP. Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ enter your SS port number and click the Check box to be sure the Subsonic port is open.

Test your setup by entering your external IP:port# to see if it connects. e.g. http://98.117.185.5:8084/ If it works, you're good to go.

Well, I didn't respond before for a few reasons including that it started to work with no change on my part. I have a feeling that there was something done behind the scenes and that's what I'm hoping it will come to again.

I've now installed the server on a different computer and have completely uninstalled it on the first. At first it worked, until my ISP changed my IP address again and subsonic didn't update. I can still type in the address with the right port and use it, but I would much rather be able to use the dynamic dns updater within subsonic as it seems my IP address gets changed about every week. Any ideas?

Also, I just wanted to add, this is an amazing service and if it ever dies, I will be using it with no-ip for many years afterwards. You've done a great job!

You should be able to resend your ip whenever it changes by going to Settings/Network and clicking the Save button.

Just restart the subsonic service and it will re-register with the subsonic redirect server. It may take five minutes or so to actually work correctly.

HTH,

Glenn

Added: or do what Gary says to do, although I seem to remember that the save button has a check to only re-register if the custom domain name changed...

Well, tried all of that and upgraded to 4.5, but it's still not working.

What custom domain name are you using?

If you are outside your lan and enter that custom domain name, it should redirect you to an IP address and port combination. Are those correct?

Let me know,

Glenn

No, those still reflect an old ip address.

When you go to Settings/Network and hit the Save button, what message do you get on the Status: line just below the entry for your site name?

Is the boxed checked for "Access your server over the Internet using an easy-to-remember address."?

Sorry if I seem to be asking the obvious, but oftentimes it's the obvious that we overlook.

Also, after rereading your original post, did you change the port numbers, or are you still using 80,443?

Although I think you were onto something GJ51 and part of the problem is that I was just that blind, I think there is/was more going on. Aside from that, when I tried to change anything in the control panel (not in browser), it gave me a could-not-write-settings error and I couldn't start/stop the service from there. That's now cleared up after a fresh re-install, and I've now got the in-browser settings ironed out, but there's one last thing.

It doesn't seem to recognize my account. It says that I'm still using the trial (donated a few months or more ago) and I get "The web address "tismon" is already in use. Please select another." The e-mail for my admin and my own username is correct. Is there anything else I can check/change?

Re-enter your unlock code from Sindre when you donated...

I think Sindre would have to remove the existing mapping for tismon for you... Even changing it and changing it back probably won't work because there is no "unregister" being sent for tsimon...

Initially I thought that might work, but the system is obviously set up so that people can run multiple servers from the same IP address (Gary for example...) so there is no "global unregister" that happens when a new registration comes in from an IP address that is already in the redirect table.

Wow, I am scatterbrained. I completely forgot about that code.
I'm sorry for wasting your time, but thanks for sticking with me on this. Everything seems to be working again.
