404 with Port 80 but "couldn't connect" with Port 8080

Postby WFStarbuck » Tue Oct 04, 2011 5:33 am

Problem Description: New user here. I have set up Subsonic and tried ports 80, 4040, and 8080 but to no avail. I can access the music on my LAN but not through an external computer. I get two errors I see are common here but have had no luck in solving them. If my port is 80, I get the HTTP 404 error when trying to make my "internet server." If my port is anything else it says my server is registered but it couldn't connect. I see these are common but none of the solutions I've found have worked.

Troubleshooting Steps: I have attempted a ton of different Port numbers including but not limited to 25, 80, 81, 4040, 8080. I get the same error for all except 80 where I get the 404 error. I've checked my ports using a website someone posted elsewhere and I see that it can only connect to port 80. Anything else I try cannot get through. So I disconnected my router and connected my computer straight into the port in my wall. I am on cable internet with a very fast connection but not using a modem -- my local ISP has set up a LAN port in the wall of my apartment. Regardless, I get the same problems with and without my router and I went through the Port Forwarding steps to make sure it was working properly. So the problem does not appear to be my router (a WRT54GS).

Playback Application and version: Just built-in Flash player for now.

Subsonic Version: 4.5 (build 2385) – August 11, 2011

Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_26, Windows 7 (30.1 MB / 46.2 MB)

Hardware Platform: Windows 7 x64 Pro

Java Memory Limit: 100 MB

Problem Filename: n/a

Output from ffmpeg -i: I don't believe it to be a problem with ffmpeg. I can listen to music without any problems.

This looks like a fantastic piece of software and I'm itching to use it, but I'm stuck unable to log in from outside my LAN with no apparent solution for the last few hours. I'm at my wits end and have no idea what else to try. This is unbelievably frustrating but I really hope someone can help me solve this and get things up and running.

Stick with 4040 or 8080, but you MUST manually open the port in your router, reboot the router, and test with canyouseeme.org for your chosen port number. Only when it passes that test will it work for Subsonic too. :)

The problem is that I've bypassed my router. My computer is connected directly to the LAN port in my wall. I've never had port trouble using uTorrent (even going through my router) and it chooses a random port each time it starts. I'm confused as to why this is causing any problem. I've tried letting Subsonic configure my router automatically but it seems not to have any effect.

This is specifically why I'm so frustrated. I've seen lots of people mention forwarding ports and I'm sure it's a common problem and it's admittedly an easy solution but I can't find any help beyond that. My ports are 'as forwarded as they can get' and I don't have issues with ports on anything else. What makes Subsonic different in this regard?

So with your pc connected directly you can see the internet (I presume so as otherwise you could not have answered  )
in which case there must be another modem /router somewhere. :?

So that we are all agreeing on what is happening:

  1. From the pc SS is running on (server) you can access the SS web page ok
  2. From another pc within your own lan (with router installed) you can see the SS web page
  3. From another pc OUTSIDE your lan you cannot access SubSonic

I am also assuming that you haven't asked SS to use SSL, if you have turn it off via the control panel.

I went through the Port Forwarding steps to make sure it was working properly.

Which were?
Did you enable upnp on your router?
If you didn't then turn it on and try again, if you have then disable port forwarding within SS and forward the ports manually as alphawave7 has already suggested.

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

On my WRT54GS UPnP is enabled by default. What I don't understand is whether my ISP is using a router I don't have access to or not, I have never had any problems with uTorrent. I don't believe it's a problem of my ISP blocking every port but 80. If it were, I wouldn't be able to use uTorrent. Something else is going on here.

I have not activated HTTPS. It sounded interesting and I toggled it once but all it did was make things stop working so I reverted back to using Subsonic without it.

I have indeed manually opened ports 4040 and 8080 inside my router's settings per the instructions here: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54GS/Subsonic.htm

From your puter hosting Subsonic, does it pass the canyouseeme.org test for port 8080? If not, the port is not seen publicly. Either the router is not forwarding properly, or your ISP is indeed blocking port ranges. Who is your ISP? uTorrent function is irrelevant for our purposes, since it may use NAT traversal methods..we rely on specific ports.
