video transcoding, ss 4.5, ubuntu server 11.04

Postby MyJimmyWeb » Wed Oct 05, 2011 2:52 am

Okay dokey. Music works great. Just when I try to play a video I get: Video not found or access denied. Reading around I'm pretty sure I don't have the video transcoder installed (ffmpeg?), at least not in the right directory.

I have been following http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 for help on installing/compiling ffmpeg.

In subsonic documents it says to install to /var/subsonic/transcoders/ , but there is already a /var/subsonic/transoders/ffmpeg file. When doing a ls-l command in the transcoders folder I see that the files seem to be pointing to a folder /usr/bin/ffmpeg

Anyways, just wondering on what directory to install i guess...

Many thanks!

You can install ffmpeg to the default location. Also, install lame to the default location as well. Just use the .deb files. The only thing your transcode directory needs to have is the symbolic link to the two.
My transcode directory has the following:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 subsonic subsonic 15 2011-04-02 09:14 ffmpeg -> /usr/bin/ffmpeg
lrwxrwxrwx 1 subsonic subsonic 13 2011-03-29 07:39 lame -> /usr/bin/lame

That is all that is in there. :)

Hope this helps.

EDITED: Make sure your video files are read/write/execute for the subsonic user. So all my files are like the two symbolic links above. subsonic is the owner and the group.

Still having trouble. Reinstalled ubuntu server, ss, and ffmpeg according to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 . Still getting same error. i checked out /usr/bin and there seems to be no ffmpeg folder there. The install location for ffmpeg right now is ~/ffmpeg. Still getting used to file structure in linux. Don't think permissions are an issue as music works just fine and I set the folders up the same way...

Alrighty. I had some success building ffmpeg from source following this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1071262

Worked just great for a while until I installed Plex Media Server on my machine. I had to run "apt-get -f install" to update some dependencies and now I'm back to: Video now found or access denied.

Help me?? ; P

Try playing a music file which is NOT an mp3 FFmpeg should then kick in, this would test if its a ffmpeg problem or permissions problem.
Cannot help further cause I know diddly squat about Ubuntu.

The very last line says encoder not found for output stream. Would love to still get this up and running along side of my Plex Media Server. While I love the accessibility of Subsonic I think that Plex has a better interface for TV shows and movies with it's scraping abilities.

That message means that ffmpeg was not compiled with the encoders for your video source.
As I have never needed to compile my own ffmpeg I cannot help further but it looks like its missing the video library.
