Web player (Shockwave) issue with certain MP3 encodes?

Postby pharaohweb » Mon Oct 24, 2011 7:10 pm

Hey folks,

Anyone else see the following subsonic behavior (myself and a fellow user experience the same thing):

  • Certain MP3-encoded tracks experience terrible playback artifacts through the any web-based player. This manifests as choppy/broken audio (unlistenable) for a few seconds until the player "gives up" and simply moves onto the next track. Tested on the same set of MP3s across IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Repeatable on two separate Subsonic installs (one under Windows, one under Linux).
  • The same MP3s work fine on the Android player; audio plays flawlessly.

I don't think it's an encode or transcode error, but rather some incompatibility with the web player and the particular transcoded stream output?

The log shows the lame resample command line for the file.. but I see no failure post that point.

Anyone seen web-only playback issues which seem specific to certain files?

If you could post/attach a problem mp3 so we can test with our installs that would be helpful.

I realize I should've posted more info per the "How to ask for help!" thread. As an engineer, I suppose I should know how to file a bug report. Here 'tis:

Problem Description: See initial post.
Troubleshooting Steps: See initial post.
Playback Application and version: Issue happens on Chrome 14.0.835.202 m & IE 8.0.7600.16385
Subsonic Version: 4.5 (build 2385)
Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_18
Hardware Platform: Windows Home Server SP2 (also happens with a friend's install on FreeNAS)
Java Memory Limit: 250MB
Problem Filename: Happens on several, but one example is \\Server\Music\Ride - Play EP\01 Like a Daydream.mp3
Output from ffmpeg -i:

And, even though I think the previous reply was a joke, here's a link the exact file which gives me issues: http://www.mediafire.com/?3wu9zbqqhb98imc.

Thanks!

So as an engineer you think that requesting a sample of the what you are having a problem with is a joke!

Yes I can confirm that JW player does have an issue in playing that track while the normally very fussy jukebox player played it ok.
I couldn't see any problem with the tags but it did have album art stored in the tag.
Knowing that the afore mentioned jukebox player does have issues with embedded album art (over a certain size) I removed the art from the tag after which the track played ok.
Why? No idea :?
I then embedded the same art back into the track and again it played ok
So it must be an issue with how it was tagged perhaps?

Fascinating!

I tag all my files using Tag&Rename and typically embed artwork... perhaps it's where the artwork is, as you say, a certain size (it's all scraped from Amazon.com, but I do know that different albums have different sized artwork).

I'm going to play around with the tags and see if I can further trap what the actual failing condition is.

Splendid debug, BKKKPewsey! :D
