Unable to play external players

Problem Description:
I can only download and play external players if the 'Control player automatically' setting is checked. And if this setting is checked I have to click one of the songs in the playlist (in the browser) in order for my stream to start, I'd like to control when I play and pause the stream from my player of choice, not from the web frontend. When I click 'Play' or 'Stop' in an external player with 'Control player automatically' setting unchecked, nothing happens (no playlist download).

Troubleshooting Steps: Restarted subsonic service, created new external player and tried with 'Control player automatically' setting on and off (only downloads playlist with 'on').
