Using WD MyBookLive for Media [Resolved]

I would like to use my NAS as the repository for music for Subsonic. I installed Subsonic 4.6 on Ubuntu 11.10 and am trying to configure it. As I am a newbie to Subsonic and Linux please excuse my ignorance.

When I put the media folder name in the settings form what do I use instead of the typical Linux file structure (e.g. /var/music)? I tried using smb://mybooklive1/Public/Shared Music but this was not acceptable? Is there something else that I should be doing to use the NAS device? Please be gentle.

You have to do what's called "mounting the drive." The external drive must look like a regular drive to the linux machine, and this is accomplished by mounting the drive. Think of it as a transparent shortcut to the external drive, where for all intensive purposes, the linux machine treats the drive as if it is attached directly to the machine. At that point, the path to the external drive would look like the path to any other internal file or folder.

Thanks for you help. I think that it is getting me in the right direction.

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop and have Samba working properly. I have added the following line to the end of /etc/fstab to attempt to establish a permanent mount of my "Shared Music" in the Public share.

//mybooklive1/public/shared music/ /media/shares cifs username=username,password=password 0 0

- where the actual username and password are entered

I have also tried it with the IP address as follows:

//192.168.0.102/public/shared music/ /media/shares cifs username=username,password=password 0 0

When I execute sodo mount -a

I get the message

[mntent]: line 14 in /etc/fstab is bad

When I look at Dolphin I see a mount that looks like

Public/Shared on //192.168.0.102

This makes me think that Linux does not like the default share folder name "Shared Music" due to the space, or maybe there are things that I do not understand about the MBLive3T file structure.

I tried a \ before the space and replaced the space with %20 with no luck.

I figured it out.
I used the escape code \040 for the space and the mount was established.
I was then able to use /media/shares to configure my media in Subsonic. Up and running. Thanks.

By the way, when I need to work with spaces in linux, I wrap the whole string in quotes (for example, '/var/music/Movies/TV Shows'.)

But it is terrific that you figured out how to do all that by yourself and pretty fast I might add.
