OT but anyway. I've tried for a number of times to migrate to Linux in various forms, both desktop and server but it seems we're not made for each other.

Hopefully someone else reads this thread and know how to help. Suggesting, with or without smiley's, to migrate to Linux is a bit counter-productive.

Hmm! seeing the problems some of the linux users are having just getting videos to play I think I would concur :D

I think it would be a good idea to start a thread similar to a previous one where users could post their hardware specs
but geared more towards video transcoding.
It will be interesting to find out what the min hardware specs for a successful transcode are.
The only question is what sub-forum to put it in - General or FAQ :?
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, Image but some abuse the privilege!

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Perhaps I make such a thread. For me as I said earlier this isn't a big issue but I would think it should for others. Like for people who spend an hour a day on the tube, on a bus etcetera. It would be just perfect to watch a couple of episodes of Two and a half men without going through the procedure of filling up the memory card every day

I split the last post. A new thread has been started for people to post their specs.
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8680

If anyone is still having a problem with transcoding, that can stay here. All specs go to viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8680.

Bought myself a new processor and now movies run smoothly. But I have noticed an interesting thing (at least to me being just a user). .avi files still makes ffmpeg hit the roof but .mkv files only uses up to 50% of cpu time. Quite the opposite of what I would think. The same as with the .avi files goes .mpg and .avi files in xvid. The cpu usage shows almost like a sinus wave with cut off tops.

This "tests" was done at 1000 Kbps and from computer to computer

I'm gonna go over to the new hardware specs thread now and share my specs as they do work now even though it's close not to.

EDIT: Latest ffmpeg reduced cpu time to between 25 and 50 on mpeg videos. Read more here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5466
