Unsuccessful Update

Postby climbchild » Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:32 pm

Please help. I've had a successful install running on my HP MSS running WHS 2003 two years now. Was adding some more users for streaming last night when I noticed the "update to the newest version 4.6" I did this, man do I regret it. It all seemed to go well, installation-wise. After installation, the service was not started. It will not start, there is no tray icon, nothing. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, tried various older versions, rebooted, I have nothing else to try and really miss my streaming capability. Please help.

What happens if you try to start the service manually using the services control panel?

Is there anything in the log (located at c:\subsonic\subsonic.log by default)?

By services control panel, do you mean the menu that comes up when you right click on the tray icon? As of right now the only options I have are in the program/start menu. When I click "start service", a very fast DOS box pops up and then disappears, but nothing starts. The other functions like subsonic tray, and stop service respond in kind. Does this help? I appreciate your help very much.

No, I mean the services applet in the Windows control panel.

Not knowing what version of windows you are running makes it tough to tell you how to get to it, but I usually right click on My Computer, choose manage, and then open "Services and Applications" and then "Services."

Right click on the "Subsonic" service and try to start it.

But your symptoms suggest a borked Java install. if you go to www.java.com and click the install button to install the latest version, does it complete? Does the java test page (http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp) work after that?

I was reading through some of the other posts and stumbled upon the aforementioned "Java" discussion. It appears that my machine attempted an update last evening. I uninstalled Java completely, reinstalled version 6.31 and then attempted a fresh install of SS. So far, so good. I'm having to redo all the settings, but I'll survive. I'll let you know how it pans out. But it appears that the new Java update and SS 4.6 are not playing together nicely. Thanks again.

Java 1.7 does have a problem with SS and Sindre is aware of it. I didn't realise 1.7 was being pushed out via normal updates yet :?
