External players on Mac (iTunes, VLC, etc) don't work

Postby Globe199 » Sat Mar 10, 2012 1:20 am

I'm trying to use external players on a Mac (Lion), but nothing seems to work.

In iTunes, the playlist appears in the sidebar (it's just called "play"), but it's empty and does nothing.

In VLC, at least the track names/artist/duration load in the playlist, but they won't play. The error I get is: "VLC is unable to open the MRL 'https...&suffix=.mp3'. Check the log for details. Part of the problem may be this from the log: "access_http error: cannot establish HTTP/TLS session"

Someone else out there must be using external players on a Mac. Any suggestions? This works fine in Winamp under Win7x64 for me.

Based on what I'm reading at the VLC forum, it's possible that I'm encountering a certificate problem. I'll be damned if I know how to fix it though.

I've had problems with external players for some time now. I can get VLC to work but only if I use IE9 as my browser. The external player doesn't work for me in Chrome.

Even in IE, whether I use VLC or WMP, it only works with music - not video.

Well, it does appear that it's a certificate problem with VLC (and probably iTunes too, but that has no diagnostic tools; this would also explain why it doesn't work on iPad, because the SSL isn't functioning). So I exported the certificate from Firefox and did everything I've read online. I put different forms of the certificate in VLC's certs folder, and I get a different error, but it still doesn't work:

gnutls tls client error: TLS handshake error: The Diffie-Hellman prime sent by the server is not acceptable (not long enough)
main tls client error: TLS client session handshake error

This is on both Mac and Windows versions of VLC. It *really* makes me wonder why Winamp is so easily able to negotiate the SSL connection. I've never had any problems with it. But I want to be able to listen to Subsonic on Mac.

I did my testing on a site wirhout SSL enabled, so that wasn't an issue for me.

iTunes doesn't support streaming lossless formats or SSL.
VLC doesn't work with SSL.

iTunes works if you transcode your lossless formats to .mp3 over non-ssl connection
VLC works with lossless streams, as long as the connection isn't ssl.
All tested on OS X.
