Subsonic crashes; maybe due to java memory problems

Postby HavingProblems » Sun Mar 18, 2012 1:34 pm

Hey guys,

I've been running into weird problems.
I'm running subsonic mainly for video streaming; at the moment I only have less than 10 GB of video material.

I get really strange errors while streaming. I can't quite tell where it comes from, therefore can't really troubleshoot.

When I start subsonic service for the first time on a random day, the streaming of the first video works fine, until I try to do something with it, e.g. change bit rate, jumping to a different time...
Sometimes the changes work, sometimes they don't. Or if I start a movie and then switch to another, sometimes it works, sometimes I get an error.

The error message is always the same "Can't find video or no permission".

I checked the log files and it tells me that there is a Java Exception "Can't allocate memory". Well I tried to change the memory to 256, 512 MB and restarted without any effects.

Here is the log file within the browser:

Code: Select all
[3/18/12 2:31:45 PM CET]   INFO   PlaylistInputStream   username listening to "Movies/movie.mkv"
[3/18/12 2:31:45 PM CET]   DEBUG   TranscodeInputStream   Starting transcoder: [/var/subsonic/transcode/ffmpeg] [-ss] [0] [-i] [/home/username/media/Movies/movie.mkv] [-async] [1] [-b] [1000k] [-s] [640x360] [-ar] [44100] [-ac] [2] [-v] [0] [-f] [flv] [-vcodec] [libx264] [-preset] [superfast] [-threads] [0] [-]

[3/18/12 2:31:46 PM CET]   WARN   TranscodingService   Failed to transcode /home/username/media/Movies/movie.mkv. Using original.

And here the log file from the server:

Code: Select all

[2012-03-18 14:31:46,615] DEBUG TranscodeInputStream - Starting transcoder: [/var/subsonic/transcode/ffmpeg] [-ss] [0] [-i] [/home/username/media/Movies/movie.mkv] [-async] [1] [-b] [1000k] [-s] [640x360] [-ar] [44100] [-ac] [2] [-v] [0] [-f] [flv] [-vcodec] [libx264] [-preset] [superfast] [-threads] [0] [-]

java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "/var/subsonic/transcode/ffmpeg": java.io.IOException: error=12, Cannot allocate memory

Any suggestions?

I'm sorry, but I don't think I quite follow.

I read the other thread. Are you suggesting that I install a static ffmpeg? Should I return to an older version? How do I even know, if my ffmpeg is static or not? Could you elaborate a little further?

The thread I referred you to describes some of the issues involved in getting video running properly. If you are running the standard Windows Subsonic ver. 4.6, it should handle most video well without modifications. Later versions of ffmpeg do handle some aspects pf cpu utilization a little better, but if your mostly working with less than blue ray or hdtv quality, the standard installation should work fine.

Other issues that may affect accessability include permissions settings, if any to where the videos are stored, but that is usually only something that needs to be addressed if you're loading files stored on a NAS or another storage platform. If the media is stored on the local machine, permission settings should not be a problem, but they still can be if the folder security settings were adjusted so that Subsonic doesn't have permission to open the files.

You can also run into issues related to how the video was formatted into it's current form. Some video translation software works better than others and can produce different results.

The bottom line is that there is a lot of trial and error involved.

Let us know what OS you are running and where your files are stored. The more detail you provide regarding your setup the better our chances are of getting your problem solved.

Thanks for your time!

I am running on a Debian Wheezy server, with the media folder within my home folder. So there shouldn't be any permission errors.
As I said, every video works, but for some reason (somehow due to memory allocation problems), it just stops working, but I can't seem to figure out a pattern when it stops working...
