Cannot connect to server through mobile device

Postby cathay.mpgi » Thu Mar 08, 2012 10:31 am

Hello Everyone,

I (try to) use subsonic to stream music from my home computer—an HP laptop running Windows 7 64 bit version—to the isub music streamer app (version 3.0.4) on my iPad and/or iPhone. When everything works, it works beautifully. The problem seems to be that I am getting very inconsistent connectivity; one day I can connect to the server and another day I can’t.

Typically, what happens is the following: I turn on my computer and wait for everything to finish loading. The subsonic tray icon usually is green, which means that the program has started up on its own. However, if I try to connect via my iPad or iPhone, I receive a message saying that either the subsonic server is down or I have entered the wrong username or password (I haven’t). If I don’t get that message, when I try to load an album or song list, I receive a message saying that the app could not retrieve the album/song titles. My experience is consistent on both devices. So, the problem doesn’t lie in one device or the other. If I open the tray icon on my computer, click the localhost link, and go to “Configure Network Settings” on the home screen, usually I see the following two messages: “successfully registered web address” and “router found.” After about a minute or so, the “router found” message changes to “successfully forwarding port 80.” If I click the “save” button at the bottom, it once again takes about a minute or so to tell me “successfully forwarding port 80,” but the “successfully registered we address” message changes to “…is registered but could not connect to it.(ConnectTimoutException).”

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling subsonic as well as stopping/restarting subsonic on my computer—both of which occasionally resolve the issue, but most of the time don’t. I’ve also tried changing my personal server name, which doesn’t work.

I can play music directly through subsonic on my laptop, which I would expect since I’m playing the music through the device that contains the files.

If it has any relevance, I’m currently residing in China (incase the “Great Firewall” some affects my usage). But, I don’t think that has any bearing since my use or disuse of a VPN doesn’t seem to affect my use of subsonic when subsonic actually works.

Please note that the above log capture mentions that I successfully played certain songs. I played these from my computer (not through my iPad or iPhone) as I typed this account of my problems.

Thanks in advance for any help. If anyone requires any more information, please let me know. I have to admit, I'm not the most knowledgeable person about computers. So, you may have to walk me through some steps if you request further information or give me suggestions about how to rectify the situation.

Two things I would change.
  1. Change the port from port 80 - this is the standard http port and is used by anything on your pc that needs to talk to the outside world.
e.g. windows update, antivirus software etc.
SS needs it own dedicated port - it doesn't share nicely :)
  2. Increase the memory limit from 100 to say 256.

Both of these can be changed via the user control panel/settings tab

Thanks for the suggestion. But, it didn't work.

I changed the port from 80 to 1025; and I increased the memory limit to 256.

At first, it seemed to work. But, this morning, I'm back to the same results as I described above.

Make sure your server has a static internal IP address - if the IP address changes the port forward rules will break.

Sorry, but I (tried to) follow your advice, but the problem still isn't solved.

In case I did the wrong thing, here's what I did:

I went into Command to check to see if I have a static IP address. Here's what I saw:

Based on what I read online (I'm really not knowledgeable about such things), I interpreted this to mean that my IP address is/was dynamic. Was I correct?

I went into Network and Sharing Center, selected Change Adapter Settings, clicked Properties under Local Area Connection, selected Internal Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and deselected "Obtain an IP address automatically." Under "Use the following IP address:", I entered the values for IP address, Subnet mask, and Default Gateway shown in the capture above; I also used the DNS server values shown.

For a few days, after I did this, I was able to connect to subsonic via my iPhone/iPad's Isub app consistently, but with two problems: every time I restarted my computer I had to stop and then restart subsonic and I couldn't connect from outside my apartment. In other words, when I was at home, I could connect via Isub just fine, but, at work, I couldn't.

After a few days of being able to connect at home, I wasn't able to connect this morning. I tried stopping and restarting subsonic on my computer a few times and reinstalling subsonic once. No success. I went back into Network and Sharing Center and reselected "Obtain an IP address automatically." Now I can connect again on my iPad within my apartment. I haven't had a chance to test it out anywhere outside my apartment yet, but, given my history with this program, I'm sure it's safe to say that the problem still hasn't been resolved.

Oh, yeah. I'm still using Port 1025; and my memory limit is still up to 256.

So, what's the next step?

Thanks

Have you setup port 1025 forwarding in your router? You need to set the ss port to forward to your computer to be able to access from outside. You might still have the port 80 setting.
