MP3 transcoded even with options turned off in settings

I'm having issues with mp3s being transcoded down to 96kbps. I have tries both Subair and Thumper on OS X and both have the same problem. I also have the android client that seems to work ok as long and I have transcoding enabled and set the max bit rate to 320. Then it streams mp3 without transcoding. Doing the same for the OS X apps doesn't work. Always transcoded to 96...

The log shows the following when using Thumper (OS X client)

I've tried disabling mp3 transcoding, enabling transcoding and setting it to 320 or 32 and it always streams at 96kbps. It definitely is at 96kbps as it sounds pretty bad!

Make sure you set 320k in the player menu for that particular player.
I know that quite often catches me out

I have 320 set in the ss web admin thumper player page... Then I have 320 set in thumper too. Still transcodes mp3s to 96... No matter what I set the max rate to in player and web admin it is always transcoded to 96 when streaming to the Mac (same with subair). Same when I disable transcoding. Same with Apple lossless files even with transcoding turned off.

I've restarted both server and client after making changes.

I'm stumped! Given that it works on the android client OK (apart from when set to unlimited) perhaps it is some mac issue?

Hmmm. So If I set the rate in Thumper & ss to 32 or 64 then the log says it's transcoding to those rates. 128, 256 or 320 then log says transcoding at 96...

And if I turn off transcoding, alac streams just fine but with transcoding on it gets stuck at 96kbps again...
