NP. I'm not a big fan of external drives for a number of reasons; among them are heat related issues. The enclosure usuallly aren't well ventilated and they tend to run hot and generally have higher failure rates than drives mounted in well ventilated cases. They do tend to exhibit strange behaviors whenthey start degrading that aren't always easily identified as a disk problem until they get severe. It's a more progressive thing than you would first suspect. My old HP Media Smart Server used to chew up drives and I'd scratch my head for days trying to solve problems until I realized that a drive was dying. That may or may not be a factor here. Also, my netbook only has 10/100 ethernet which could be a bit of a bottleneck, but should be OK under normal useage.
If you see the same behavior from locally stored media then you may need to be looking at the netbook, the OS, and the SS install as the culprit.
I'm a big fan of an occasional clean reinstall of Java and SS if I'm having problems. Sometimes it's just easier than spending all day trying to find a problem. I usually uninstall Java and SS completely, then install the latest versions of Java and SS. It only takes a few mins. and then you know your on solid ground. If you still have issues with local media after that, then you probably have OS or underlying hardware problems.
