Postby nebulousman » Fri Aug 03, 2012 10:13 pm

I have a network drive - actually a hd connected to the usb port on my netgear router. I use itunes to access my music library on this drive with a couple of macs. I have an older intel macbook pro where I installed subsonic 4.7 beta. My goal is to keep the macbook pro running at all times and through subsonic access my music library on my iphone and ipad while I'm out.

I finally figured out how to add the network drive as a media folder to subsonic and I can see all my music in the directory. I tried substream app and it sees the directory but when I try to play it crashes - I figured it was a substream issue - before paying 5bucks for isub I decided to try to access the library through my macbook air and I got the following error. I'm trying to figure this out - any help would be appreciated - I'm not as computer savvy as others on this forum - it looks like something about my security settings or permissions - I've seen instructions on settings for windows machines but am having difficulty finding mac specific instructions - thanks

Which version of beta are you using? if its 4.7b2 then try 4.7b3 (just released) which has a lot of bug fixes.
(I think  I am only just now installing it :D )

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

I'm using 4.7b3

I wonder if it properly scanned all my files - I see them all listed but I was expecting it to take time because my music library is large but the scan took a few seconds

How large is your library?
Mine is 20k songs and only takes 5 minutes to scan

10K songs and it took a minute - I guess that would be expected

How are the files structured on the drive? If they are all stored in a root directory that can cause problems. I always recommend that the files are organized as X:\music\artist\album\tracks. i know a lot of ituners just dump everything inot a single direvtory sometimes and let iTunes figure it out, but now that you're only at around 10k you might review your organization and structure while it's still small. Whod a thought there would be a time when 10k was a small collection? Certainly not me in my teens when I was buying 45's LOL.

45's are vinyl singles for anyone under ??? well certainly anyone a bit younger than I am

EDIT: mine takes about 4-5 min for 63k files.

I think my music is organized well - artist/album/songs

the music is on a hd connected to the usb port of my netgear n750 - I used ubuntu to format the drive then copied everything to it over the network - from my macbook pro and macbook air I go to connect to server - smb readyshare and I see it - I have itunes pointing to it and everything works well with itunes provided of course I'm connected to my network

I installed subsonic on my macbook pro and it took me a while to figure out how to add the destination path to subsonic - I ended up draging and droping the readyshare usb media folder from finder into the terminal window then copied over the path to subsonic - it worked in that I see a listing of all my music

I picked a url in with .subsonic.org then went on to get my app for streaming - decided to start with the free one substream - it lists my music but if I try to play it crashes - I then picked up my macbook air and typed the url in my browser then logged on as a user which I had setup earlier - again I see all the music but can't play and I got the error above

I could change my music library location or even setup a second drive connected directly to the macbook pro with the content on it (I'm guessing that should work but then I'd have 2 instances of my music and I'd have to remember to import new music to 2 places) - I also have a readynas duo on the network and could use that (it is not the 'pro' version so I don't think I can install the subsonic plugin on that which is why I'm using the macbook pro). I'm guessing smb might be the issue and I know the duo can handle other methods so that might work too. I'm now thinking maybe its a good idea to take a step back and put some thought around the setup to come up with the most efficient way to accomplish what I want which is - continue to use itunes at home and run subsonic accessing the same content files to stream to my iphone & ipad over the internet. Any advice would be appreciated

I placed a folder with some music files in it on my desktop - I also tried pointing to music files on a hd directly connected to my usb port - tried to add it to subsonic and I get the following:
