4.7 Playlist path problems

Postby ggibby » Mon Sep 17, 2012 4:08 pm

Hello All,

Apologies in advance if this is well-worn ground.
Did an in-place update to 4.7, haven't had any significant problems.

Until I try to redirect to a new Playlists folder.
As I recall, the first item under Settings>General was the path to the Playlists folder.
It's gone.

Also in the web UI, the More Actions... dropdown had a Load option, which opened the Playlists menu.
Also gone.

My desktop players (SubWiji, SubGadget, SubAir) all find/play old lists from somewhere, not sure where.

Am I missing a new setting/path?

Playlists are now stored in the subsonic database instead of in the file system. There no longer is a "playlist folder." The old setting for "Playlist Folder" is a location that subsonic will check for files that need to be imported into the database when first starting the new version.

OK, now I see the Playlist panel on the left. Nice, but...

For me, it's much easier to have MediaMonkey auto-generate the playlists to a shared folder
which SS and CasaTunes both monitor. Required very little interaction on my part.
That was my setup before 4.7. :-\

I wish SubSonic and MM could combine their powers - the result would be truly awesome.
...and then adopt/acquire/befriend CasaTunes, thus putting Apple and Microsoft back on their heels.
They could just call it Audio. "Wherever you are, so shall your music."

But I'm a dreamer.

What features from MediaMonkey do you miss in Subsonic?

There really isn't any comparison between MediaMonkey and SS, even if you only look at Playlist creation.

In MM, autoplaylists are built on (almost endless) rules that access any tag/DB field,
inclusion or exclusion from another playlist, even the presence of cover art.

Subsonic can't even overwrite same-name playlists on import in 4.7, requiring the user delete old before importing new,
where in 4.6 you just saved the new version with the same name in the Playlists folder, and SS opened it.
Maybe I'm the only user re-generating 8-hour playlists for daily use.

MM is a library manager/local player, SS is streaming.
I wouldn't expect either of them to try and be All Things,
but there must be a way for them to interact smoothly.

For example, the Export M3Us/Create Playlists function in MM is an addon written by a user.
Maybe it could be updated to include a 'Send to SubSonic' option.

When MM Updates tags after editing, could it inform SS to rescan?
Even better - a shared DB.

If someone offered MM/SS Integration software (or a combined product), I'd pay for it, and I suspect others would, too.

On a related note, I recently installed bought and CasaTunes, which requires iTunes or Windows Media Player.
When developers of $500 music server software don't bother to include a collection manager in their product,
it tells me that the library side is a PITA to build/maintain.
Sindre has done a great job keeping Subsonic moving and growing, as have the MediaMonkey people.
Combining the two could be epic.

I can't be the first person to suggest this - the user crossover must be pretty substantial.

I'm a fan of MediaMonkey and wholeheartedly agree that MM and SS should be integrated better. MM is the end-all of media library managers (IMHO). I wonder if a MM plugin which automatically exports MM playlists to the SS database would be a possibility!

I used to use playlists, but ever since I wrote this, I hardly use them anymore. If I need a playlist, I generate one instantly in Subsonic, based on genre/artist. Not as advanced as MM but it fills my needs. I wouldn't create playlists based on cover art anyway... but if I need to, I can generate one from the DB. (I guess that's not really a selling point though)

As another MM user I agree with some of the sentiments expressed here regarding playlists.
I think some of playlist functionality lost in the 4.6 to 4.7 transition needs to come back.
The idea of users now having their own playlists is great but not at the expense of losing the playlist folder
which IMHO worked well in 4.6.
So if we could have back our playlist folder (Global playlists - admin only editing) which are just read and not imported
I'm sure sure a lot of users would be grateful.

p.s. That and the album artist only search is why I am sticking with 4.6

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Hello,

I'm missing this features as well. I exported all my iTunes playlists and put them into the subsonic playlist folder to hear the music on the go. Another alternative may be a api to say something like this "subsonic -add-playlist -user testuser -password testpass myplaylist.m3u". The same for editing and removing playlists. Or is actually possible???
The playlist administration is too time-consuming in the webinterface.

Kind regards

Hi,

same here.
Since subsonic doesn't have some kind of "smart" playlists I had the following Cronjobs for my recently added songs:

23 */6 * * * echo "#EXTM3U" > ~/.subsonic_playlists/new30.m3u && find /home/user/stuff/music/ -type f -mtime -30 >> ~/.subsonic_playlists/new30.m3u
23 */6 * * * echo "#EXTM3U" > ~/.subsonic_playlists/new60.m3u && find /home/user/stuff/music/ -type f -mtime -60 >> ~/.subsonic_playlists/new60.m3u
23 */6 * * * echo "#EXTM3U" > ~/.subsonic_playlists/new90.m3u && find /home/user/stuff/music/ -type f -mtime -90 >> ~/.subsonic_playlists/new90.m3u

which are worthless since 4.7.

So a way to automatically add/import playlists would definitely be nice.

thx,
Bapf

Subsonic 4.7 is worthless for me as well because of this regression. I need the ability to push playlist files from another computer. I do not care about disk access times or usage, I can spare the extra five operations per minute.

At least provide us with API methods that lets you add/update playlist by submitting the paths to files, not just their ID. Right now there is no way to go from playlist file -> API -> playlist in Subsonic since you can't look up the id of a song by submitting its path (which is the only info you have in playlist files).

+1
I auto generate a lot of playlists based on various criteria and sync to a particular folder. Before 4.7 I would just have subsonic go to that folder for playlists. Now there seems to be no way to keep a set of playlists up to date without manually deleting and re importing it.

Hi,

I guess a simple fix to improve the situation would be to automatically re-import a playlist if the timestamp of the file has changed.

I should probably also add the "Playlist folder" user setting again.

Cheers
