I'm not jumping to any conclusions until we've heard from Sindre, but this DOES look like a major update at first glance, and ad free cost me 2.67 US. :-) I'll survive.

Sorry if this sounds like whinning or a rant, but I've been a long time supporter and advocate of Subsonic and have given a lot of time and effort evangelizing Subsonic on podcasts and other public forums, not too mention the time and effort I've put into supporting others here in this forum.

To be blindsided by this is unconscionable.

From now on ALL my future donations will be going to the modders who have been far more responsive to feature requests recently. I WILL NOT pay for the Subsonic app under any circumstance solely on principle as I feel that my trust has been breached.

I will use alternate apks available - and even pay for them - even if they are inferior - rather than support this kind of treatment.

How unfortunate.

This isn't a matter of cost. I can certainly afford it. This is essentially changing long-term past practice that loyal supporters have previously agreed to and in many cases have made contributions above and beyond what was expected or asked for based on that relationship.

Sorry but I don't appreciate being "thanked" in this manner.

MeneM wrote:Solved it by deleting and then reinstalling the app. Not very intuitive but hey.

To be even more clear: I do not mind paying, and would not mind paying for every installation. I DO mind a hassle like this.

Plus, when I start paying for something I expect and demand WAY more then from a free version. Stable, and all features should be working. In this case: Video. Completely missing. Flash does not run on Android phones....

I'd appreciate another update that would rectify that situaion.

Sadly, a common problem in Android..keeping all devices in sync with updates, among several Google ID's and such. Deleting and reinstalling an app that is acting up is way too common, unfortunately. ( or a force stop/delete cache).

I don't use the video portion of SS, yet...so I cannot help with that. The flash issue, however, is requested and discussed a great deal here, so it is just a matter of time and Dev. Cheers!

Yeah, just like user access control that's been requested repeatedly for several years. Thankfully a modder who has already fixed multiple long-term feature requests is working on it. I find it a bit frustrating when features that have been requested for years by many users are ignored, but then a modder can get involved and implement them within days of submitting a request. I've been asking for resizeable frames since I started using SS. Never even got a response. Then a modder provides it in his version within days of the request.

I do appreciate all that Sindre has done; certainly without his efforts we wouldn't have this wonderful application. That said, I'm not blind to what I feel is poor practice in regard to recent developments.

Confirmed - Video playback is done.

Sorry - I'll have no part of this.

No heads up from Sindre at all that this was coming. No announcement, no beta testing. The TODO list hasn't been updated in ages. Call it update surprise!

Sindre has been virtually absent from the forums. search.php?author_id=3&sr=posts

If this is his idea of appreciation for the support of his user community, then I will no longer be a part of it.

Finally, I would have no problem paying for the app, even if he were to charge $10, $20 or whatever he felt the market would bare; but to do so without informing long-term loyal users of a major shift in the previous paradigm is simply a "slap in the face" to all who have been loyal supporters over the years. Dropping support for video and having to pay for ad free version of the app are a MAJOR shift from previous past practice that we should, at the very least, have been informed of, prior to getting an upgrade surprise.

From now on my donations will be going to the modders that play fair.

That's it. I'm done.

Gary,

Are you saying that video doesn't work in the new version even on devices that it worked on previously? ie, devices that Flash is still working on?

I haven't installed the update and probably won't, at least until I can get some answers or explanation.

No - my mistake - the interface is different and has to be selected differently. Video is working, although I suspect there will be problems with Jelly Bean unless you do the flash install work around posted on xda.

I'm still pretty po'd by the way this was done.

I'm a typical user: Payed for the license and simply uses what's available.

In that respect I've ALWAYS only used the music part of Subsonic. Me, my wife, couple of friends etc. One girlfriend uses the video/flash part regularly for her TV series. (She moves around a lot).
I never use it, I can't choose the language, subtitle, pauze correctly, scrub through the video.. and the quality of the picture is sub-par. I've have tried upgrading the flash player. Which worked, but did not help.

Anyway, for video I simply use Plex. It's simply written with video and series in mind. And subsonic with Music in mind. Use the tools that work I say.

All in all I think I've payed a grand total of 70€ in fees and donations (Not counting my friends apps on android/iOs) for both Plex and subsonic. It's a steal for what you are getting.

There's no doubt that Subsonic is an incredible value. That doesn't justify a unilateral change of terms of service that abrogates prior understandings and long established past practice without prior notification to the user base.

I know the feeling, believe me, I do. I was a user of Bibble Pro before Corel bought the app (Corel, the place where software goes to die)...

But we need to stop feeling like the owners or contributors of software like this. As far as I can see from the forum here, the original developers never really where into their userbase as true open source developers are.

No matter how good and great the software or how good and great the person/developer. At some point, either boredom or money takes over. (Unless it's a open source software project. Then the next person with passion can take over.)

forgive my cynicism, it was grown by experience. I now know it's easier to not care anymore.

I see nothing wrong with paying for a service that I appreciate. If you don't want to pay just use an ad blocker. There's always ways around.
Clearly I can't relate with those who have been around for a while, I only found out about subsonic a few weeks ago.
