Subsonic is horribly slow, please help.

I've been trying various streaming solutions to stream my music across my local network, and to my work. So far I haven't found one that I really like, or that worked really well, but I thought Subsonic might do the trick.

I installed it on my media server (Windows XP SP2, P4 2.4, 1gb ram). I started it up and added my main music folder \Music\ and it added the subfolders as albums. The subfolders in my \Music\ folder are things like:
\Albums
\Soundtracks
\80s
\90s
\Billboard Top 100 2005
\Billboard Top 100 2006
\Billboard Top 100 2007
\Singles

Then in those folders I either have subfolders with Albums, or just music.

I then removed the \Music\ folder, and added all the subfolders to Subsonic instead. That seemed to work with the Albums anyway. I then tried to access Subsonic from my laptop in the other room (Gigabit wired connection).

I can log in fine, and the page comes up. The random albums come up and change as they should. However, it takes 5-10 minutes for the frame on the left to populate. I thought it was because I had a large collection (2,916 artists, 1,016 albums, 11,967 songs, 70.80 GB), but after spending some time in the forums I see that my collection isn't nearly as large as other people's collections.

I noticed that under the alphabetized list of albums is a huge list of songs (maybe 2000 or so). Very unwieldy and obnoxious.

Lastly, when everything finally comes up, I can add items to my playlist, but nothing actually plays. The player just doesn't seem to work at all. I'm using Firefox 3.0.8

I'm hoping someone can offer some suggestions on how to install/setup Subsonic so that it runs well, and works for me.

Thanks!

My first suggestion would be to move all of those songs that appear at the bottom of the list to their own album folder (call it something like 'Miscellaneous" or "Singles"). This may greatly improve the response of loading the left pane index.

After you move these songs, you might have to re-index your library in Subsonic for it to take effect.
