ID3 Tag Sorting

Postby fosser3 » Tue Dec 18, 2012 11:58 pm

Hey All,

I'm a a new subsonic user and so far this program is pretty neat! The features are very extensive and exactly what I'm looking for. I have ran into 1 problem so far though that has hindered my thoughts on the program. The structure of my FULL albums is Music --> Artist --> Album --> MP3's. From what I hear this is a good way to set up subsonic. I do have 1 folder on my computer where I put all of the EXTRA songs. Basically its a folder with a ton of random MP3's in it. Each MP3 in this director is properly tagged but nothing is sorted. I'm attempting to figure out how to get Subsonic to sort all of my music by artist on the left hand side. If anyone knows what I'm missing I would be extremely happy! Thanks for the help in advance.

Unfortunately Sindre decided to use the Album Artist tag rather then the Artist tag in 4.7 which rather messes up compilations :(
As this is not really a true compilation album you could change the Album Artist to equal the Artist tag.
Whether that will sort them correctly or not I am not sure :?
Another suggestion would be to sort them in artist alphabetical order in your tagging software then use auto track numbering so that the track sort will override SS alphabetical sort
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, Image but some abuse the privilege!

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

BKKKPewsey,

If what you say is true here is an example. Take the following mp3 for example.
Image
You can see that I have both the Album Artist and Artist tags filled. This is what my subsonic interface looks like.

Image
As you can see, even with the dropdown box set to "All folders" the artist "Dev" is not showing in the list. If I scroll further down the page you can see that the song "booty bounce" does show but its listed as a song and not an artist.

Looking through the changelog from "Subsonic 4.7.beta1 - May 12, 2012" it shows the following:
REST: Full support for accessing the media collection organized according to ID3 tags, rather than file structure.

This would lead me to believe that I am overlooking a feature that will allow me to sort by specific artists even if the directories are not perfected. Let me say lastly, I am not trying to complain about this service, these are just a few questions that I had about it. Hopefully this can help someone else out in the long run. Thanks for the reply!

You might want to read this topic: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10587

My collection is displayed and browsed solely based on tags. I could put all my songs into one folder or each of them in a separate folder and the interface would still look the same with artists in the left frame and an artist/album viewer in the main frame.
