Networked Media

Postby Donavyn » Sun Jan 27, 2013 12:05 am

I've scanned the forums as much as I had time to do, and didn't see the information that I was looking for.

I installed the latest server package on my Apps server, and wanted to link (add media folder) of my music collection located on another server.

I attempted to add:

M:\
\\192.168.7.xxx\Music
M:\Rock

I still get the same error:

"No media folders found. Please change the settings."

Entire music collection is mapped on my 'M' drive, but it refuses to let me input a network address for it to use. I have been able to select a local folder and the error goes away but that defeats the purpose.

I am running the absolute latest version of the server on a Windows XP Professional 'headless' server on my network. All network connectivity is verified to be functioning correctly. I'm not sure what else you would need, but any help on this is appreciated.

The default user a/c that SS runs under, which is a system a/c, has not got privilege's to access network shares.
Therefore you need to change the user a/c that the SS service is running under to one that can.

Thanks for the information, here is what happened:

I logged in as the administrator, selected USERS and modified my personal account to include it as an administrator account, with the permissions to change, add, etc., everything was selected.

I logged out as admin and in as my personal account, attempted to add M:\ as my music folder, and I still get the same error.

What could I be doing incorrectly, is there anything else that I can try as I'd really like to use this software.

I think what he means here is you need to go in to your services and change the user that subsonic is running as. To do this, right-click on MY COMPUTER, then select MANAGE. Then go to SERVICES, then right-click and do a properties on the SUBSONIC service. Then go to the LOG ON tab and change the account to something that has rights to access the network share where your music is.

You can't use mapped drives. Use UNC Shares. Edit the Subsonic service account with a username and password that is identical to an account using the same credentials on both host machines and has permission to access the remote shares.

Instructions on how to edit the service account for Windows is in the Tutorial.

Thank you for that very 'friendly' reply.

I will look into the information that you provided, but there are a few factors that are coming into play as of now that will determine whether or not I continue to use the software.

Who doesn't support network/mapped drives?

Why is the support so sarcastically reluctant?!

Just to name a few.

Subsonic has never supported mapped drives. I suspect that it may simply be due to the fact that it's a cross-platform application that can be run on several different operating systems and that managing mapped drive compatibility just may not be practical.

Most likely because this is a USER forum - not a customer support service. My noted sarcasm is nothing more than an attempt to make you aware of the fact that the very issue you raise was just addressed by the thread I linked to that had yet to clear the opening screen of the help section and that with minimal effort you would have found the information you need.

If you interpret that as sarcasm, I will be happy to no longer address your concerns and let you seek advice from other users.

The ability to read is such a terrible thing to waste ...

Then I will be happy to not waste your precious time any longer.

This app lost a sale because of ... well, because of you.

Funny how things go ...

When I joined the forum on 10/20/2010 I was user #4100. Sindre was #1 of course opening on 11/29/2005. So it took a little less than 5 years to get to 4100 users. The biggest complaint back then was that the forum wasn't active and users weren't getting the information they needed. I came here looking for an alternative to the horrible Twonky Media product that was on my HP ex485 Media server - which I still have running fine. I was so PO'd by the fact that I loved what Twonky was supposed to do, but it was useless on the ex485 as it would continually max out the cpu and was slow and just a wate of time trying to get working properly.

When I found SS, I decided to give it my full support and urged everyone on the HP forums I used to visit to convert to SS. I hammered the issue on podcasts and any where in cyberworld that gave me space. I was happy to support the effort here as this was a great program at a low cost with an active dev that listened to the community.

Today, 2 years 3 months later, the forum now has 10,159 registered users. It has more than doubled in less than half the time it took to get to 4100 users. This is my 3,002nd post. Not all of them have been as eloquent or as gracious as I had hoped they would be but of the 6059 new members that joined the forum after I did, I hope that some of my posts have been helpful for them.

The success of Subsonic is due to the vision of its creator and the loyal core of users and moderators that have shared their time and talent helping others. That is why I have enjoyed participating in this community so much.

Lately, as I approach eligibility for Social Security, I find that more and more I sense that many new users seem to be a bit hypersensitive and easily offended. I find this phenomenon true of today's culture in general. Today, nobody can take a joke and someone always takes offense to the dumbest things and feels that they are duty bound sworn deputies of the political correctness police. Maybe I'm just getting old, but the"good old days" were truly a lot more fun. When I was young we gave as good as we got and everybody had a much thicker skin, realizing that all was in jest. We weren't so easily offended.

All in all, I recognize that I'm getting a bit tired of answering the same issues that have been addressed hundreds of times for users that don't even take the time to read the tutorials and act like information is hidden. Then to add insult to injury, they come accross as though we owe them something. Obviously, they need to spend some time over at XDA if they think they are being mistreated over here.

I'll be pulling back a bit from this forum unless I see an issue that interests me. The forum is in good hands with BKKK, hakko, bushman4, daneren2005, MadEvil, and the countless others that FREELY give of their time to help new users. Besides, most of the issues raised in new posts have already been answered several times. Over the past two years, the hundreds of thank you's I've recieved more than outweigh the occasional justified criticism of my surley sarcasm. My only defense is that I always try to get people to think and prod them in the right direction. I beg the forgiveness of anyone I've offended, and wish to thank all of those who have appreciated whatever I've been able to contribute to perhaps the best forum community available.

As I find that I now use the Madsonic mod now as my primary Subsonic mod I will be spending more time over there hoping that his forum can gain a bigger following. Perhaps the change of venue will brighten my outlook. As always I am available by PM for any of the many friends I have made here.

I hope that Subsonic continues to evolve and grow for many years to come and would like to take this opportunity to thank Sindre for all his hard work and dedication to his creation.
