Some songs need "nudged" to start playing

Postby GCacciatore » Thu Feb 21, 2013 2:40 am

Doing extensive troubleshooting to try and figure out why some tracks will not start when selected. in iSub the app just spins. Now what is interesting, when in the Subsonic thin client, if I select the track, it does not play, BUT, if I nudge the progress bar 1 - 2 seconds into the track, it plays. Any similar experiences out there? I did rebuild the dbase and no change. I am also using the latest ffmpeg from Zeranoe's FFmpeg Builds Home Page: <http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/> which I needed to get WMA Lossless files to play. Any help is welcome. Thank you 8)

I did not install or try the demo prior to purchasing. Is there something specific in the demo that's not present in the current release?

What I meant was that you should try connecting to the Subsonic demo server to see if you still get the same behavior.

I'm merely suggesting that it might be a good first step to try and determine if the problem is specific to the phone app or the server you're connecting to. If you connect to

http://subsonic.org/demo/index.view

and the symptoms you're having disappear, then you can focus on your server as being the source of the problem.

On the other hand if you experience the same problems on the demo server, then you need to work with the app developer to see if you can identify and resolve the problem.

My initial guess is that your issue is most likely server side related to wMA transcoding, but I'd still start with verifying that the server is the issue by connecting to the reference server and eliminating the iSub app as the problem.

Maybe I have not clarified what is happening. I will try here. Certain albums within the library, so far WMA will fail to start when selected to play. The following behavior is exhibited

with Subsonic web client - Track is selected, play does not occur. Using the progress bar at the bottom, if nudged a few seconds into the track, play will then begin
with iSub on iPhone 4S - Track is selected, and it just spins. It appears to be downloading, but does not, and appears to be in an infinite loop

One album in particular, that used to play, now exhibits this behavior

Version 4.7 (build 3106) – September 12, 2012
Server jetty-6.1.x, java 1.7.0_13, Windows Server 2008 R2 (90.3 MB / 166.9 MB)

Since not all WMAs (both lossless and not) are no affected by this nuance, I am trying to identify any troubleshooting techniques at the folder / file level that may be causing this. I have already reviewed permissions etc. against those that play fine with no success. Please let me know if this helps. Thank you

Yes, that's clearer. We've seen this before and i don't think there has ever been a definitive answer. WMA files, particularly lossless, have manifested this issue and to the best of my knowledge it's an ffmpeg issue.

There are similar problems with 24 bit flac files as well.

There is probably a way to modify the ffmpeg string specifically to solve each problem, but I don't recall having seen anyone post a solution here yet.

Continuing to research this issue, I may have found a common event that is causing this issue. If I alter the properties of a file i.e. Update the album name, this issue appears to occur, If I move a file to a new folder, this also appears to contribute to the problem. I have rescanned folders, with no luck, and also selected the clean up database feature, however, when I click clean up database, it does not appear to execute so I am not sure if that feature is working.
