Server 'responded successfully, but could not authenticate'

Postby agentred » Fri May 17, 2013 12:41 am

Hey everyone,

I just bought and installed Subsonic on my synology ds213. It seemed to be working great, libraries scanning, but I can't get my personal server set up. On the network settings page, if I click automatic port forwarding and enter a server name, it spits out

Status: Successfully forwarding port 4040 and port 4041.

Status: xxx.subsonic.org responded successfully, but could not authenticate it.

If I uncheck automatic port forwarding and set up the ports manually using my router (Asus n66u) I get the error

Status: xxx.subsonic.org responded successfully, but could not authenticate it. ConnectTimeoutException

In both instances, I've tried pinging the ip and checking the port with canyouseeme and they come back with no errors.

Someone was having a similar problem here
viewtopic.php?t=5993)
but I tried everything they did and couldn't resolve it.

Quick question, I suppose, when I forward ports on my routers, I have the following fields.

Service Name
Port Range
Local IP
local port

so for port range I enter 4040, for local ip I enter the 192.168... of the synology running subsonis, and for local port I enter 4040 again, right?

Any help at all would be very very very much appreciated, thank you,

Try entering port range as "any" or leave blank. The incoming request can be on any port but is then forwarded to 4040 inside your network.

You might need to consult your router documentation regarding how to properly set up the incoming definition to not restrict the request.

Hey,

Thanks for the response, I tried leaving the port range blank and it said none of the fields could be left blank so I put in 1:8000 and tried subsonic again but got the same error. If it's any help, the Subsonic page is running at

Code: Select all
https://192.168.2.174:4041/index.view

so I tried changing the local port to 4041 but it didn't make a difference. Are there any other possibilities? The other thread mentioned turning off SSL, how do I do that? I tried going into advanced and putting 4040 or 4041 in the Non-SSL stream port but it didn't help either.

Many thanks again,

This type of issue boils down to setting up port forwarding properly in your router 99.99% of the time. Unfortunately, all routers have different interfaces that make it difficult for someone else to identify how to set up your particular setup.

You could post the make and model of your router here and someone else may be able to assist by downloading and reading the manual for your router if the docs are available online.

Another approach I recommend is to look at existing port forwarding rules currently in place. Skype and many other services may already have entered working rules that you can examine for differences from what you have entered for Subsonic. Port forwarding isn't always intuitive and straight forward and is frequently set up wrong. It's not something that most of us do every day, and even after years of doing it for my servers, I still make mistakes. Some router interfaces are worse than others, so it's never easy to just give sure-fire advice on this problem. The answer has to be specific for the device on your network that does the port forwarding,

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure what was up but I restarted the router, restarted the NAS drive, it gave itself a new IP address and now.... it works! Hopefully it stays this way, thanks again,

Edit: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO a few minutes later it just stopped working. Oy.

It is a pain! I spent all day yesterday bridging a Timer-Warner gateway to a Cisco wireless router so that a client could use the guest network for his clients visiting his office. It was working perfectly after initial setup - then just dropped the internet connection 24 hours later. I still have no idea why.

More voodoo than science!
