Mobile Data throttling issue (probably T-Mobile issue)

Postby dispatch » Mon Nov 18, 2013 7:59 pm

Hey guys, I'm not sure who can move threads but I'd like to bring this to the main help forum's attention: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=12798

The gist of it is over the last few weeks I (and at least one other, the OP in the above thread) have experienced what appears to be data throttling on mobile data while using subsonic. I have not any issues with any other apps that are bandwidth intensive, nor does the T-Mobile plan I'm on do any sort of throttling bar none (and in any event, I'm not even at 1.5GB for the month).

While this appears to be a T Mobile issue, I wanted to post this here in case others are experiencing it. The other OP opened a case with TMO and I'm attempting to do the same. Luckily for me, I'm on a prepaid plan with a Nexus 5 so if they can't or won't do anything for me I'll just pop over to Straight Talk. I'll keep you posted.

Here's the gist of it in case the thread doesn't get merged/moved:

- After about 2-5mb download/streaming speeds drop to about 10kbps, other apps get full bandwidth even while this is occurring
- Does not affect client when on Wifi
- Does not affect AT&T, and probably most other mobile carriers
- Device, android OS level, and subsonic client do not matter, they are all affected
- Other bandwidth intensive apps, e.g. Netflix, Pandora, 7digital, etc. are NOT affected

After typing this I had another thought: what is Comcast (my home ISP) is shaping the traffic before it sends it to TMO's network? If that were the case, TMO should be able to tell, right?

Run a speedtest (http://www.speedtest.net) on your "Server" machine, while not streaming anything, and note the results. Then do the same while you are streaming to your device over 3G/4G, and then a third time over Wifi.

Do the tests after your device seems to start the throttling. If your upload speeds drop considerably, then the problem is with comcast (they are known to do this, btw). You'll have to complain to them if that's the problem.

The only other suggestion would be the quality of your cellular signal - it could be fading in and out (and be a tmobile problem).

Hey there, thanks for the reply. Your test wouldn't diagnose my problem because if my theory of Comcast traffic shaping is right (which I don't think it is), the upload to speedtest's server would not be subject to the shaping policy that the data going to TMO's network might be. You see, the traffic leaving my box at home is only affected when it goes through TMO's network.

The problem is NOT the mobile signal but is certainly traffic shaping, which should be apparent based on this and the other thread's information.

FTR I do believe this is a TMO and not a Comcast problem, but could anyone with a SS server that is NOT on comcast provide me test credentials so I may completely verify?
