Podcast Playback Stops

Postby JesterEE » Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:58 pm

When listening to some podcasts with "segments" I get a stoppage of playback by Subsonic

You can use this shared link (NPR Technology Podcast 9/7/2011 - http://jesteree.subsonic.org/share/gOLlC) to see what I am talking about. You can see that at the 5:27 timestamp, playback will stop. I can start playback past that time to get the next segment, but I can not play the whole podcast through.

There is nothing all that special in the event log either. Please see the last lines here:

Code: Select all
[12/13/11 4:45:47 PM EST]    INFO   ShareService   Created share 'gOLlC' with 1 file(s).
[12/13/11 4:45:56 PM EST]    INFO   PlayerDao   Created player 2.
[12/13/11 4:45:57 PM EST]    INFO   CoverArtController   Created thumbnail cache c:\subsonic\thumbs\500
[12/13/11 4:45:58 PM EST]    INFO   PlaylistInputStream   guest listening to "NPR Topics- Technology Podcast\npr_140275944.mp3"

Is there anything else I can check to assist the developers to debug this issue?

I'm having the same problem with another NPR podcast (Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!). Every spot where the radio program breaks for commercial, the flash player stops the podcast and resets to 0:00. If I have added another item to the playlist, it proceeds to that next file and plays it. Like JesterEE above, I can manually click past the time it cuts off, and it will continue to play until the next commercial break, but as these are hour-long casts, each pixel skips almost a minute of content (aside from the sheer frustration of having to find the place in the file that it cut off).

Is there something in their podcasts (like an EOF in a PC file) that Subsonic is detecting and interpreting as the end of the MP3?

It's been a year now, and the problem persists...

It's a jPlayer problem.

I have this problem when I listen to Wait Wait through the web player.

But, when I play through the Android app (DSub -- because it actually will stop when my car turns off, where the Subsonic app would keep playing), everything works fine.

It appears to be either a problem with JWPlayer (the Flash-based player Subsonic uses) or the way the file is encoded, or a combination of both.

There's probably "end of file" tags in the mp3 from the podcasts (each segment was probably recorded individually then concatenated?) and when JWPlayer interacts them, it says "Ok, the file is done".

There's probably some flag out there that will remove these extra "end of file" tags in the ffmpeg encoding. I haven't gone through the options to find out what would resolve this, but I'm sure there's an expert around that may know it off the top of their head!

Ya, I don't think podcasting features get much love. I found this link to add a new transcoding line to my MP3s which seems to make nice files that the player likes:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8928

The downside is all MP3s are transcoded before being played which puts extra load on the server (unnecessarily) but the end result is working streaming.
