Can't Stream

Postby cirehawk » Thu Nov 21, 2013 5:49 am

First off, let me say that I've been a registered user for 2 or 3 years and I've loved the app. That being said, my frustration level is growing higher and higher due to the fact that the android subsonic app on my phone (HTc EVO 4G LTE) has been pretty much unusable the last few months. Whenever I try to play a song (streaming or caching), the first few seconds will play and then it just stops and takes me back to the play list. After that, it won't even start playing. This behavior first started with OGG files (MP3's played fine), but now MP3's won't even play. Any help would be appreciated, cause I'm almost to the point of giving up on it, which would be ashamed.

Try another Android app, like DSub or UltraSonic. That will tell you if it's an issue with your app or with your server. (I hear there's also an update to the Subsonic App, so make sure you have the latest version.)

What server version are you running?

As far as the android app, I am up to date. I always update when a new version comes out. In the past (based on the same recommendation), I have tried Ultrasonic with the same results. I'm not sure if I tried DSub, but I don't think so. Regarding the server version, I was running 4.8, but installed 4.9 beta2 last night. Again I had the same results. Come to think of it, it's possible that this started when I went from 4.7 to 4.8 but I can't say. I still have 4.7 around, so maybe I'll revert back and test it. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to look for another solution.

Is this happening over wifi or 3g/4g?

Both wi-fi and 3g/4g.

It sounds like a problem with the general frameworks ability to play those songs, so I doubt DSub will make any difference in this case.

Is general frameworks server side thing, or client side?

I mean the android media framework. It might be that the server is sending invalid files but either way if the main app is not able to play it I don't dsub will be able to. You can try it though and if it doesn't I can just give you your money back.

I think I found out the issue, and if so I owe the developers an apology. I have always rooted my HTC phones and run custom ROM's. Well 2 or 3 months ago I switched ROM's and it's quite possible there may have been an issue with it. About a month ago my phone went into a boot loop and I couldn't stop it until I did a fresh install. Well yesterday I was testing Subsonic again and the app locked up. I killed it, but after that my phone started rebooting like crazy again. It wasn't boot looping, but when it did boot up I would get a ton of errors and the phone was pretty much unusable. I had to do a fresh install again (lost some data, which is annoying), but this time I flashed the ROM I had been running since I got the phone. And guess what? Subsonic seems to be playing nicely now. I need to test it out a bit more before I conclude that was the issue, but I'm leaning that way. There were a couple songs that didn't play, but that could be an issue with the songs themselves. I'll do more testing and post my findings.

Hey: I had the same problem and tracked it down to transcoding errors. This page helped a lot; I have it working just fine again.

http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/subsonic/index.php?title=Transcoders

See in particular the section on "Setting up transcoder cahins" I pretty much CnP'd from there to get things going.
