"Refresh" not working? Forced to "Scan media folders now"

Postby interr0bangr » Tue Jan 28, 2014 4:07 pm

I primarily use subsonic via the web interface at work to stream my music from my external hard drive at home.

Back in 4.7, I would remotely download files to my home hard drive while at work and, using the subsonic web interface, would simply "Refresh" the media folder they were downloaded to before they were immediately scanned, recognized and able to be played.

Then something changed once I upgraded to 4.8. When following the same process, the subfolder the files were downloaded in would immediately be listed the same as before, but when diving into it, none of the actual files would be displayed or sometimes only the very first file of many (10-20 or so) would be displayed. The only way I could get subsonic to see and play these newly downloaded files was to preform a full "Scan media folders now" scan which resulted in thousands and thousands of files in multiple folders being rescanned, when really all I wanted was the single new subfolder located in a single media folder to be rescanned.

I was hoping this might be fixed in 4.9 but it seems to be acting the same way. What does the "refresh" button actually do if it's not scanning the new subfolders and files in that media folder? It used to work seamlessly which is the only reason I bring it up, I love Subsonic other than that!

I guess you are dealing with an "improvement" which doens't turn out to be beneficial.
To be quite honest; I run into similar problems when I update the tags in my music folders since upgrading to version 4.9.
Suddenly a lot of my music isn't visible in Subsonic. And when I make changes in the tags, they don't reflect in Subsonic. Not even after I did a rescan about 10 times.
When I look at the pulldown-list from genres I see a gazillion genres with 0 ( zero) albums.
The database function of Subsonic just doesn't update like it should.

Having the same problem. Subsonic just isn't finding any new stuff I add to my drive/folder. I have to totally kill and refresh the database every time (Like this: Un-check the media folders, Save, rescan, clean db, rescan, recheck folders, and then rescan). This works and I'm resigned to doing this once a week to keep reasonably up to date but I use Mediamonkey as my main media player and it has a new Android app that gives me access over the net to all my tracks. Bubble UPNP is also very good. Due to this I am using Subsonic less and less. A real shame as I'm a really big fan and donated to support it in the early days.

Like you, I wonder what the rescan function actually does if it's not picking up updated/new file tags. I've even totally un-installed Subsonic and deleted the whole Subsonic folder in case the database had been corrupted but that also didn't work. I did have some Java issues a while back - perhaps that's the root of it? Or perhaps it's having too large a database (60,000 tracks)?

WISH A SUBSONIC DEV WOULD READ AND RESPOND TO THESE PROBLEMS?

OK, totally given up. No response from Subsonic and many other posters are having similar problems. Have now reverted to 4.6 and it works fine. No need to refresh and it's very stable on my PC. Shame that developers aren't responding as it would be nice to be running the latest version but I can't go through life spending half an hour re-scanning my database from scratch every time I add an album. Pity.

The latest beta may have resolved it, but I'm not running the beta to find out.
