504 - Gateway Timeout at work

Postby chipmunkofdoom2 » Thu Jan 02, 2014 1:33 pm

Hello,

I have successfully set up a Subsonic server. I am using the unlicensed software on a Windows 7 desktop. I'm pretty proficient with networking, firewalling, and port forwarding. Everything is set up and working as expected, however I can't access my server from my computer at work. Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch for what the rules of my office may or may not be, there are no IT policies about listening to streaming radio, and everyone does it. I'm totally in the clear here.

When I try to access my server via IP address and port number on my smart phone, I can access it no problem. However, when I try from a browser on my work PC, the browser sits there for a bit, then I get a 504 - Gateway Timeout error. I'm using the standard port (4040) and accessing the server via my public IP address.

Does this sound like some sort of port or firewalling issue with my work's network? It seems that in the past when I've run services at home and tried to get to them from work, I've always gotten an error from their firewall (you know those generic pages that pop up and say you're doing something you're not supposed to be doing? That kind), but I've never gotten a 504 because I'm trying to do something they've blocked. Does the 504 say anything specifically about how my Subsonic setup works?

Thanks in advanced for the help!

I know I am grave digging my own thread, but this is no longer an issue for me. I have since moved to accessing my Subsonic server through an Apache server over SSL. I have not solved the problem, but I am accessing my server through a completely different method than I was before and the instances of these timeouts have gone down drastically.

At work I still have intermittent problems with 504s and timeouts, but that may be any combination of IE8 (thanks, work) or the firewall setup we have. Everywhere else I have tested I have not had any issues, except for the occasional slowness, which could be anything from my connection on my user agent to the connection on my home PC.

There are many reports of users having difficulty getting through to their Subsonic servers when they are at work. This most often seems to be due to port blocking and white listing of sites at the workplace gateway that restricts access to the internet by the employer.

In your case it looks like your employer is using a proxy server as a gateway that you have to go through to get to your server and the communication between the proxy server and your Subsonic is timing out. As stated in the explanation given in the link above, there can be many reasons this can happen, but without having access to your workplace gateway, you're probably just stuck with their setup.

If it's not a configuration issue, then the other most logical reason would be poor upload speed from your setup at home. If the upload bandwidth is too slow or intermittent, then the workplace gateway may just be set to drop the connection. The best way to determine that is to test another Subsonic site that you know has good upload speed.

I have a solid 35mbps up. You can test a connection to my site using the guest account at

http://mgp.subsonic.org

Use "guest" for both U&P

If your able to get a stable connection to my site at work, then you can pretty much assume it's your upload speed that's the problem. If my site times out, then it's just the workplace gateway configuration that is dropping the connection - perhaps by your IT departments design.
