Static IP address and dyn.com

Postby Marksaunders23 » Thu Jul 31, 2014 7:06 am

Hi All,

I tried to set up Subsonic once before and it worked well over my home wireless network but not on 3G. Looking into it further since I am fairly sure the issue was that my ISP does not provide a static IP address. To get one I would have to move to a plan that would be more expensive or provide less data per month.

My understanding is that dyn.com provide a service that get around this by providing a static IP address by also providing a personal web address and software which checks for when my IP address changes.

My questions are 1) is my understanding correct and 2) how would I use a dyn.com address in tandem with subsonic to overcome my lack of a static IP address?

Thanks!!

Yes and no.

Unless your ISP is changing your external ip frequently there isn't any reason you can't just use the subsonic.org vanity URL as it essentially works about the same as any other service. When you set up the vanity url at subsonic.org it will report your external_ip:port# to the redirection service which will then point the request to your external address. If you external ip changes, you only need to go to Settings/Network in Subsonic and click on SAVE to resend the information to subsonic.org.

Most ISP's don't change the external IP for your router all that often. Over the last 20 years using both Time-Warner and Verizon, my ip has only been changed about around a half-dozen times or so.

I could be mistaken, but I think if subsonic is running on the server it does an auto-update to subsonic.org every 2 hours, so even if your ip changes, subsonic should report the change on it's own.

YMMV

Most often when you can't connect over 3g it's because your trying to connect from outside your local network and prot forwarding is not set up correctly. Go to http://canyouseeme.org and enter the port you are using for subsonic. The default is 4040.

Thanks Gary J, I feared the truth might be nearer to your point. I remember using canyouseeme when I tried to get it to work the first time.

I guess I didn't configure my router correctly for port forwarding - I thought I had followed all the instructions but user error is a definite possibility!

I wonder if I added the wrong IP address somewhere, this is outside my field so maybe I added the PC IP address rather than the IP address the ISP assign where I shouldn't have or vice versa.

I think I'll give it another crack this weekend and see how it goes - at least I now know there's no reason to subscribe to dyn.com etc.

Thanks!!
