Lost password

Postby Zaven » Mon Nov 25, 2013 3:12 am

I read the thread that shows how to ask for help. I am going to disregard the normal format that is required because my problem doesn't involve anything but a lost password. When i originally created my account it seems that i typed my email like XXXXXX@gmail,com. What i mean is, i used a comma instead of a period and didn't notice i guess. So recently tried to reset my password because i'd forgotton it, but it's sending it to an email with a comma instead of my real email.

Is there anyone that can help?

Unless newer versions have changed...

Subsonic Password Reset

The Subsonic music streaming server currently has not built-in way to recover or reset a lost password. If you locked yourself out, don’t give up just yet. The password reset method described in this article has been tested successfully with Subsonic 4.1 and 4.2.

Solution
Subsonic stores user passwords in encrypted form in the program database, probably using salted BCrypt hashes, although the exact implementation has not been investigated in the context of this article. It is not technically feasible to decrypt these hashes and retrieve the original password strings.

However, current versions of Subsonic export the program settings to a text file each time the server is shut down, and they reimport this text file when it is started back up. This text file also includes the encrypted password hashes, and they can easily be replaced by substituting the corresponding line as follows:

Open the Subsonic control panel and stop the service
Open a Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\subsonic\db
(on Linux this may be under /var/subsonic/db or /usr/bin/subsonic/db)
Open the file subsonic.script in a text editor

Near the top of the file, find the following line: INSERT INTO USER VALUES('admin','enc:xxxxxxxxxx',0,0,0,FALSE)
Note that the xxxxxxxxxx value is a hexadecimal string that represents the encrypted hash of the user’s current password.

Replace the line above with the following: INSERT INTO USER VALUES('admin','enc:61646d696e',0,0,0,FALSE)
Note that the value 61646d696e is the hash for the password "admin"

Save the file
Restart the service in the Subsonic control panel.
It is now possible to log on with user name and password admin, which are also the default administrator credentials. Don’t forget to change the password to something else on the Settings screen right after logging on. Obviously, this technique works with any other user account as well.

Thanks! Works perfectly. Only problem is, i reinstalled Subonic, and it's saying that my license key is now invalid. Any ideas?

That's easy. The license key is just an md5 hash of the email address you used to submit the registration.

Huh. I must have mistyped my password on a new install - before I put in an email address or anything.

Since I don't need ANYTHING from this fresh install, I've "completely removed" subsonic, searched whole HD, removed anything with "subsonic" in it, re-install.... and it still has my wrong password. (The paths given here don't have those files, but I deleted those whole directories to no avail)

Can I really, truly remove subsonic (or reset password) so I can continue?

System - Fresh 14.04 Ubuntu, latest .deb from website. Hardware same as worked-for-years set up I had before OS replacement.

Actually ... you must have mistyped it twice???? Really?

If you've truly removed all the data directory information and then done a clean install, the first log on should just be admin/admin. If that's not the case then you've still got a lingering data file that's screwing the pooch. Either way if your installation has a different password, the information previously listed should allow you to figure out what it is and reset the admin password to the default.

I'm pretty sure there's a file/setting somewhere - but I don't know what that is.

Really, I used a random password generator and fumble-fingers saving it. When I went to change it to something simple, it wanted the old password, and I'm stuck. That said, some passwords (if you type them very fast) it is possible to make the same mistake twice.

My point is - I cannot find the files mentioned. I'm guessing they moved in 4.9.

The OP has confirmed that the instructions listed in the second post are still valid.

May be under /var/subsonic/db or /usr/bin/subsonic/db

I'm not a Linux user so it may be also save up on level, i.e. /var/subsonic or /usr/bin/subsonic

You need to edit the script file as per instructions or be sure to remove these directory trees and do a clean install.

I would think the easiest fix would be to just edit the admin password back to default in the script file.

If none of this is making any sense to you, then I guess you're out of solutions.

Well, I *thought* I wiped those directories the first time. I'm SURE I've wiped them now. So I'll wait till my computer isn't busy doing 75 things and reboot and reinstall after the reboot... and get back to you. Just wanted to make sure the old version wasn't the issue.

Thanks for the pointers, I'll keep you updated either way!

That did it! Back in with nothing. I didn't see those files there, but I did see those top level directories. The process that worked:

Completely Remove.
Search "Subsonic" with admin privileges
Delete EVERYTHING (including those two in var and usr)
Reboot
Reinstall.

Pretty fast once you know what to do.
