Cover art won't update when embedded in mp3 with iTunes 11

Postby patrickhenry » Sat Mar 22, 2014 7:11 pm

Hi All,

I'm having a problem getting changes in album art (cover art) to show up in Subsonic when I change the cover art using iTunes (ver. 11.1). This is a relatively new problem, perhaps resulting from an update to iTunes?

Subsonic is showing cover art for some albums but not for others (for those not showing, Subsonic is displaying the relatively new multicolored square (e.g., top 2/3 red, bottom 1/3 black).

Case scenario: Nanci Griffith - there are three albums; two show the art in Subsonic but the third does not. For the two that show, I had added those albums to iTunes ~1 year ago. For the third (which does not show in Subsonic), I recently added it via iTunes. All 3 albums show the correct respective art images when I view the mp3s in the actual folders (in the Mac's Finder, if I navigate to the respective music folders, the file icons show the artwork). However, only the older two show in Subsonic.

I've tried initiating a rescan of the music library via the Subsonic interface. I've also tried restarting the Mac Mini. Neither procedure resulted in the third Nanci Griffith album showing the missing cover art.

As background I have Subsonic pointed at my iTunes music folder, which is on an external firewire drive. iTunes and Subsonic are running on a Mac Mini, fully updated OS X 10.9 Maverics. I generally use iTunes for all music management, including changing cover art.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
[system: iPhone with iSub for remote listening; server is Mac Mini (OS X Maverics) running Subsonic; Subsonic pointed at iTunes music folder stored on USB HDD]

I have a similar problem so this is not an isolated incident. I recently used PerfectTunes to fill in missing and low-res artwork in my library. The artwork embedded correctly, but Subsonic won't recognize it unless:

a)It already had old artwork
or
b)I remove the folder, rescan media, add the folder, and rescan again.

I'd prefer no to have to remove and rescan everything, losing play counts. Plus it'd be a huge pain to do every time I add art to albums.

I assume this has something to do with how PerfectTunes is adding the tag, but dbPowerAmp and WinAmp both see the art. Why won't Subsonic?

It may have to do with the version of ID3 tag you are using. I believe iTunes uses version 2.4, while Subsonic uses 2.3. You can try re-saving the tags as version 2.3 with an ID3 tag editor. (You may be able to do this in iTunes, but not sure how, since I use Linux.)

It looks like mine are 2.3, so that's not my situation. It also looks like the newer version uses the same standard for all the old tags, including art.

It seems like Subsonic doesn't check tags again after it's determined a file doesn't have embedded art.
