Songs Skipping and Choppy Playback on Android Player

Postby t1337Dude » Wed Jun 10, 2015 7:22 am

I've been using Subsonic ever since it came to be. For the longest time I've had satisfactory performance but for the last 6 months (to even perhaps a year) I've been experiencing big problems using the Android app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I've searched this forum for the issue, saw people report the same thing I'm experiencing, but saw no fixes. One thing that fixes every aspect of my issue is using the Subsonic app Dsub. I notice that Dsub, even with poor connection conditions, seems to stream much more smoothly, quickly, and without interruptions. My experience with Dsub is a lot closer to how my playback performance used to be (if not a little better). Should we really have to be paying for an additional app just for a decent Subsonic experience on Android?

Problem Description: This problem is characterized by 2 behaviors

1) If songs have to stream (download) while playing back, for even a second, it will skip to the next song. This means every time I want to listen to a new song, I have to pin it and wait for it to cache before I can listen to it without skipping.

When I'm not experiencing problem #1, which is most frequent, then I experience problem #2, which is less frequent.

2) Songs will not buffer correctly (instead of pausing until a sufficient amount of the song has been downloaded for uninterrupted playback, it will constantly stop and go). Despite having a steady internet connection, I will experience that the song I'm trying to play will often buffer, play, buffer, then play, etc.

Troubleshooting Steps: I tried completely wiping my Subsonic database and all saved information to PC for clean install. Didn't make a difference. Tried downloading a different Subsonic client (Dsub, cost me $3.99), and Subsonic works perfectly through it. It's lame we have to pay for an additional app just to get decent Android functionality.

Playback Application and version: Subsonic 4.4 Android App from Google Play Store (doesn't work). Tested D-sub 4.97 (premium Subsonic Android app) and the problem doesn't occur.
Subsonic Version: 5.2.1 (build 4428) – March 4, 2015
Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.8.0_31, Windows 8 (90.9 MB / 145.0 MB)
Hardware Platform: Windows 8.1
Java Memory Limit: 150mb
Last ten log file lines: (Nothing in my log mentions my issue)

your network speeds suck. What is the latency between android app and the server?

My network speeds are better than ever. No idea what the latency is when I'm out and about - all I know is that it used to work perfectly, and in the last six months it hasn't. D-Sub, on the other hand, has worked perfectly for me.
