Guest access

Postby p00h » Tue Dec 13, 2016 7:59 am

Hello to everyone!
I've been searching quite long for this but without success.
Is it possible to have subsonic working for guests? Not only for shared media, but to have fully functional sunsonig without registration.
Thank you.

One concern with no-password guest access is that if the URL leaks out, you're stuck: anybody, and any bot, can grab all your stuff (that's shared to the guest user) because there's no protections left. In addition to the bandwidth used up as those bots collect all your songs, you run the risk and wrath of the record labels for violating the DCMA (in America) and similar laws in the EU and Asia. Your intentions that you were only sharing it among friends won't fly in court: you still ran what they would see as a public server, offering copyright-protected songs for free.

I can understand the desire to make things easier for your friends (and yourself in maintaining the server), but that is a major risk to consider.

In addition to Acroyear's answer I can say that it is possible to just use one guest-account among multiple users at the same time.
So there is no need to expose your server to just anyone who "accidentally" hits on your server for all the reasons Acroyear mentioned.
Subsonic will not allow you to create an account without a password allthough the passwords may be very simple.
An account with username guest and password guest would work.
If your friends can't remember that than it's time to find some new friends.

"find new friends" :?

Indeed. There's nothing in the system that blocks simultaneous connections with the same login. The number of clients connecting is only constrained by your network bandwidth and the power of your server (esp if doing a lot of video transcoding).
