Artist folder art

Postby drw4013 » Thu Jan 19, 2017 11:11 pm

Is there a way to assign art for when you browse your list of Music by Artist? There's a spot for an image, but I don't see how that's populated. The only way it will pick up any art is if you have songs directly in the Artist folder, instead of in subfolders for Albums.

Is there any way to manually assign a file? Or have it grab art from Last.fm?

Thanks.

Yes.
Under the spot for an image there's a little sign of a square with a pen in it in the right hand corner.
By clicking that you get the option to search for album art.
Alternatively you can just place an image in the formats jpg jpeg gif or png in the folder and Subsonic will pick it up as coverart in the next folderscan. Any image of 500 by 500 pixels is big enough for subsonic to show a clear coverart image.
You can initiate a folderscan via Settings >> Scroll down to Scan media folders now.

I don't see the pen you are referring to for an Artist folder in either the SONOS Android app or the web interface when I browse my library - the pen only appears when I view an actual album.

I have "fanart.png" or "fanart.jpg" in every Artist folder - but it wasn't picked up in the initial scan or the subsequent scan. Am I missing something? These are all 720 or larger images - is that too large?

Hi,
See screenshot:
Image
If you already have jpg or png images in your folders Subsonic ought to have picked them up in your folder scans.
I haven't had any issues with images even when they were a much bigger than 500 x 500 pixels. I even have had some folders with pictures as large as 1200 x 1200 pixels which appeared in Subsonic without a problem.
The filename of the image isn't really important, but you could go to Settings >> General >> Cover art files: and change the line to fanart.jpg fanart.png.
But I don't think it makes a difference. Subsonic just picks up the first image it finds in a folder. So if you have multiple images in the same folder like back.jpg, cover.jpg, front.jpg and inlay.jpg Subsonic will use back.jpg as coverart since "b" comes before "c", "f" and "i".

Ok, now I'm lost. That sure looks like a single Album. I have no issue with Album art.

What I can't seem to get is Artist folder art in the SONOS subsonic app:

In each Artist folder, I have all the album folders, and then "fanart.jpg"...but no Artist image is picked up. And I don't see any way to apply it in the subsonic web application, since there' isn't really an "Artist" view. There's the A->Z view which doesn't show the artist folders.

My bad.
I thought you were referring to Subsonic not displaying coverart.
Perhaps you'd be better advised if you'd visit a Sonos forum like https://en.community.sonos.com/

Thanks, I will do that, since this appears to be an issue with the SONOS app.

The strange thing about the subsonic web app is that it doesn't pull Artist info until you actually click on the Artist in A-Z view. Then you get this:

Image

Which is pulled right form Last.fm But there's no option to change the art that is scraped...and no option to correct the Artist itself (Bio, etc.) when the Last.FM scraper pulls an incorrect Artist? There's got to be a way to correct it, right? Unless I am missing it?

You can't change incorrect Last FM info yourself nor can you change the picture that is presented
Subsonic presents the artistname as it appears in your collection to Last FM and gets the info that Last FM connects to this artist.
This indeed can result in incorrect information. Sometimes you can get a hint that the artistname is incorrect.
You then get a message warning to retag your files. It happened to me when the artistname was REM instead of R.E.M.
The only way to correct this info about a group is to edit the wiki on Last FM.

Thanks for the confirmation. That seems like a major issue with Subsonic. Has a feature request been submitted?

I wouldn't think it is a major issue with Subsonic, but rather a limitation in the last.fm API and using artist names instead of unique IDs for passing information to clients. The Subsonic code is remarkably robust in dealing with the vagueness. When there are discrepencies, I usually find it is last.fm that is being too obtuse - e.g., complaining about Alan Parsons Project because I didn't add The to it since I wanted proper article-ignoring sorting.

I'm not sure what it would take to get a feature where you can say "When I say X I mean THIS version of X and not THAT one" in Subsonic. It is so rare a situation I'm not sure it is worth it. If you happen to have works from both conflicting artists of the same name, how would you think it could handle it?

In addition to Acroyear:
If the incorrect info is annoying you, you can turn it off.
Settings >> Personal >> Uncheck Show artist bio and album notes

I guess I find that in most other library software where you use a last.fm scraper (Kodi, Plex, etc) you can just manually override the bio and art info yourself. It's a lot easier to fix.

Not to mention, the above handles non-standard Artist folders. For example: "Videogame Soundtracks" or "Christmas Music", when you want those sorted in with your Artists, as opposed to having to search by Genre. With the current Subsonic settings, I'm left with no way to override those.

Has anyone sorted this out? I don't have Sonos apps and I can't figure out how to get artist folder artwork to display.

Seems that that's a problem with the Sonos app. Might try one of the Sonos forums out there for some information.

Hello,

As I mentioned, I'm not using Sonos. I'm actually not familiar with it. The screenshots I attached are from 2 different iPhone apps I use with traditional Subsonic installs.

When browsing the index in Directory/File view there is no artwork for artists. I have experimented by placing folder.jpg inside the root of the artist folder and rescanned with no luck. That method works elsewhere in Subsonic for me.

Thanks,

Ben
