Server timeouts in iOS apps using locally via wifi

Postby pdenny » Fri Sep 01, 2017 2:58 am

I'm a relatively new SS user with a premium account. Suddenly today I'm getting timed out in all three iOS apps I use on my iPhone and iPad (AVsub, iSub, play:Sub). I use SS only here at the house via wifi. I did set up a new AirPort Express in my patio before this started but when I set one up in my living room a couple weeks ago I had no similar problems with my iOS devices. Even after powering down the Airports the result is the same. In my Subsonic Network settings, the message is Status: Could not connect to pdenny.subsonic.org (ConnectTimeoutException). On my iPhone, messages range from "Error Code -1004 Could Not connect to server" in iSub to "The request timed out" in AVsub.

Any suggestions most appreciated. Is this somehow connected to my premium account status or something weird going on locally? I haven't fiddled with port forwarding on my MacMini & router as I'm only using SS here at the house. As I said, all was working quite reliably until today.

License Subsonic Premium (expires July 24, 2018)
Version 6.1.1 (build 2a8e8d) – May 31, 2017
Server jetty-6.1.x, java 1.8.0_92, HSQLDB, Mac OS X (83.3 MB / 118.5 MB)

To briefly state the bottom line: I'm a Mac user, I'm only using Subsonic for local (in-home) streaming, and all of sudden In my Subsonic Network settings (Safari on a Mac Mini if it matters), the message is Status: Could not connect to pdenny.subsonic.org (ConnectTimeoutException) whereas it was working quite reliably for a couple of weeks since getting a Premium account. All iOS apps time out when trying to connect to my server address via wifi.

Any suggestions most appreciated. Almost no mention of troubleshooting on a Mac either here or via Google. I'm smart enough (barely) to get Subsonic installed and working but resolving this is above my pay scale.

I know nothing about Apple products (never owned), but it sounds like server is either off, or if running, is not being routed. Assuming you are using default port 4040, you should be able to access a running server by typing its IP:4040 (eg. 10.0.0.1:4040). If that doesn't work, the router (or server firewall?) is blocking the port. The next test is your public IP:4040 (eg. 217.217.217.217:4040-use whatsmyip.com to see it). When setting up forwarding on your router, test the port (4040) at canyouseeme.org.

I appreciate the response but it doesn't explain why I can't now connect after having no problem doing so for several weeks after buying a year of premium. Meh. Too much hassle--I only wanted to be able to stream locally to my AirPort Extremes. Back to Stream to Me which although maybe not as sexy works like a charm and doesn't require sophisticated tweaking of routers to work reliably. Adios, SubSonic.
