New Setup - New media not being added

Postby gisxer » Tue Jun 18, 2013 11:12 pm

Problem Description: I set up Subsoninc a few weeks ago. everything seems to be working fine except for one thing. no new content is being added. the initial scan finds all of the existing media. In the settings I have it set to scan media folders everyday at 1am. even when i click 'scan media folders now' no new items show up. I have some programs that auto download media on a daily basis and nothing new ever shows up.
Troubleshooting Steps: The only way i can get new media to show up is to delete the folder and add it back again.

Check your Event Log for error ID 2011. If it's there, check the IRPStackSize settings. Instructions on how to check and increase are here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... win-7-from

Ever figure anything out on this? I've constantly had this problem, but only since moving to 4.7 and newer. The current MadSonic builds also have the same problem for me. I've tried fresh installs and upgrades from previous versions (which don't have the problem). No matter what I try, if it's version 4.7+, it just won't notice anything new. My storage server (unRAID) is Linux based, sharing via samba. I've had this problem if I have SubSonic running locally on that storage server, or (as I have it now) running on a Windows box pointing at the file share on the storage server. It never has a problem doing a completely fresh scan of the media. But then after that, it never picks up on added stuff, despite the log showing that it made the scan, and reporting no errors in doing so. It's as if it's not even seeing the new contents.

Oh, and I checked for any instances of that event ID and found none.

I have not made any headway. i read the link provided by gurutech and i didn't have the registry entry 'IRPStackSize' so i added it and increased and decreased the value from the default to try to find the sweat spot. no changes. i started and stopped the Subsonic service and rebooted between each change. no new media.
Guygg - i have a similar set up will all my media on an unRAID (which is awesome BTW)
is there a way to downgrade Subsonic to an earlier version prior to 4.7 that doesn't have this bug?

Well now, that's an unexpected coincidence to have unRAID being involved in the mix for both of us. I just did a post over at that forum to see if anyone has any idea...

indeed interesting. but i'm doubtful that it's related to the unRAID. i have two JB'en apple tvs with XBMC running on them in my network.
both of them run a search for new content each hour and i've never had a problem with content showing up on XBMC. I am wondering what subsonic uses to look for to determine if there is a new file. does it use the file attributes or some other item to key off? anybody know what subsonic looks for?

I've got a mix of folders locally and on an unraid server. I mainly access the local files and they've been updating fine. But I saw this post and now see that the unraid folders are not updating. Never noticed this problem earlier so I'd also expect it's related to a recent update of subsonic somehow. I've also got SageTV running and it updates the unraid folders just fine.

I'm running XBMC on the same Windows front-end machine as SubSonic. Likewise, XBMC has no trouble discovering stuff from the unRAID shares. So far, unRAID seems to be the consistent variable. Wonder if it's a file system thing of the way it does date/time over SMB or some such. I've got no idea, but it's a hard consistency to ignore. The problem has been driving me nuts. So far, every once in a while I do a complete, fresh rescan, which not only takes an eternity (large collection), but of course loses certain amounts of meta and such, starting from scratch.

After spending more time troubleshooting, it looks like I've had this problem all along as well. A few folders just aren't there from the beginning. Added folders are missed sporadically. Anything going into a renamed folder is more than likely to be missed. But it's hard to see any pattern, maybe just random. I've started exploring some other options like Serviio and they don't have this issue but I'd rather stick with subsonic for all of the other advantages. Frustrating.

Chalk up another unRaid user with this issue. It's been making me consider moving my Subsonic instance to my unRaid server to see if that eliminates the issue. Also, FWIW, I have this issue with Plex too and finding new files. In another thread a user suggested it has to do with the Windows IRP stack and that upping that can help.

I'm having this exact problem (I've actually be fighting it for two years now). Has anyone found a solution? My subsonic instance is locally on my unraid server using a full Slackware install. No love.... :-(

Just found out what the issue is: I store my media multiple layers deep in the the file structure. Newer versions of Subsonic don't scan the folders whose top level modification date is earlier than the most recent update to subsonic (even if subdirectories are more recently updated). If you "touch" the top level media folder, subsonic will recurse into that folder and find the newly added media.

Just started having this problem after moving my SubSonic server to a new machine. It's on Windows, but interestingly my library is on an external RAID array. @brettjamin seems to have hit the issue - the changed date on the top-level folder is older than the date of additions underneath it on my RAID share.

My RAID is formatted using exFAT file system. Everything prior to the server upgrade was NTFS. I wonder if this problem has to do with specifics of the way the file system works... I can't think why just being a RAID would make any difference. Not sure how to fix this, but glad to know I can just touch the root folders. This seems like a bug in SubSonic, it should not depend on folder change dates since obviously they are not a reliable indicator of changes within.

I'm experiencing the same issue but with Google Drive mounted via rclone - touching the folders to change the modification time isn't feasible with this setup.

A fix would be appreciated since it's the sole reason I'm not using Subsonic any more.

This is more an FYI and work-around than a fix but, further to the quote above, it appears that making modifications to a folder that contains missing tracks will cause Subsonic to properly recognize the folder contents the next time the folder is scanned.

My setup: Mac Mini (OS X Mavericks 10.9.5) with USB-connected external HDD that houses my music (mp3s). The music folder is formed by iTunes but I use Subsonic to play (iTunes for import, file organization, tag editing; Subsonic to play and also to bring in artwork).

Recently I decided to re-rip 3 Lyle Lovett albums that were first imported over a decade ago and which sounded horrible. So, in iTunes I deleted those albums and, using iTunes, re-ripped ("imported") the CDs. Thus, the overall folder structure on the HDD remained unchanged (album subfolders actually never got deleted because iTunes/OS X doesn't discard the folder if any files remain in it, and the album cover artwork remained because it wasn't deleted by iTunes when I deleted the album). Of course, although the folder structure remained unchanged, the mp3s in the folders for the 3 albums were entirely new. In Subsonic, I used the admin tool "scan media folders now" after which some but not all of the new mp3s appeared, giving me an incomplete track listing for each of the 3 re-ripped albums. Rescanning using Subsonic didn't change anything, nor did the "clean up database tool." After reading brettjamin's note (above), as a way to force a change in each of the album folders I deleted the album cover artwork and once again reran the "scan media folders now" tool. This fixed the problem of the missing tracks - each of the 3 albums now shows up with a complete track listing.

Thanks to brettjamin for the tip!
[system: iPhone with iSub for remote listening; server is Mac Mini (OS X Maverics) running Subsonic; Subsonic pointed at iTunes music folder stored on USB HDD]
