Needing to rescan media folder

Postby timlance » Sat Nov 11, 2017 3:52 am

I have been using Subsonic for a couple of years. One issue that is about to be a deal breaker is the need to rescan the media folder whenever there is a disconnect between the computer hosting the server and the networked drive on which the media is stored. Every once in a while didn't bother me, but, for an unrelated reason I have been having, the rescanning has become a major PITA. I am wondering if there is something I am doing wrong or some setting I might be missing.

Mac OS X 10.11.6
Subsonic 6.1.1
2.5 GHz i5 Mac mini (Late 2012)
16 GB RAM
Media folder is 1.1 TB.
Media is stored on an external hard drive connected (USB 3) to an AirportExtreme.

The need to rescan when the networked volume has existed since the beginning of my using Subsonic (i.e. under previous versions of both the operating system and and Subsonic).

Above I say "deal breaker" because I have found a much more amenable solution - ServeToMe. Drive remounts? No problem. Player (StreamToMe) reconnects right away and all media is available. Subsonic takes 20-30 minutes to rescan. (I am unsure as I've never waited around to see exactly how long.) I prefer the Subsonic Mac player, play:Sub to the system I have recently found.

At this point I am not so much concerned about the network issue. I am wishing the rescanning was more expeditious and wonder if there's something I am missing.

Please tell me I'm missing something! Thanks for any consideration.

Seems to me that your problem is not Subsonic but the disconnections of the networkdrive.
I've been running Subsonic for some years now with all mediafolders on a NAS and I've never had this problem.
Perhaps it's worth while to examine the reasons why your network drive gets disconnected so often.

Are you saying you've never, not once, had your media folder drive disconnected from your network?

Yes, I've said I have the connectivity issue. But since my other solution (Serve/StreamToMe) doesn't have the "rescan issue" I am seeking to know if something can be done about it. IOW, is it normal that the there must be a rescan? If so, so be it. I am not even saying Subsonic works the same as ServeToMe, other than both being "servers". But not having to rescan makes my life easier.

Yes, I'm saying that I've never had any problem in losing connectivity between my Subsonic servers and my NAS. Perhaps it's because I'm using UNC-paths rather than drive letters.
I guess there's no way to stop Subsonic re-scanning the mediafolders if the connection has been interrupted.
A workaround may be to configure Subsonic to scan the mediafolders just once every 60 days. ( Settings > General --> Scan mediafolders: Every 60 days )
In that way Subsonic wouldn't "notice" as often that the connection to the mediafolders is lost, thus reducing the number of folderscans.
