Can't figure this out..

Postby danm003 » Sat Nov 28, 2009 1:54 am

Hi folks.

Downloaded Subsonic, and really like the idea of it. BUT can't get my head around it.

I've been reading this forum, the FAQ, the website but still can't understand how to make it so that I can have my family listen to my music from their house.

Do I have to install the Tomcat application?

I thought it would just be a few easy steps and I would be up and running!

Once I installed Subsonic and went to localhost:80 or whatever I could stream music on this computer, but that's obviously going to work.. What I want is for somebody not on this network to be able to do it.

Isn't there a simple solution?

Sorry if this sounds really stupid, I guess it is..

Cheers

You need to make the server appear from the outside world, not just on your local lan.

The steps, in simple form are:

1. Find out your external IP (go to http://www.whatismyip.com/)
2. Figure out the IP of your PC with subsonic (open a dos box and type IPCONFIG)
3. In your router, you need to allow access to port 80 on your PC with subsonic (open ports)
4. Ensure that if you have a firewall it allows port 80 connections.

Then your family outside your house will use the link http://yourexternalip where you use http://internalip

It's pretty simple, but the tricky part is normally finding the right page on the router.
If I am more stupid than you, does that make me better at something than you?
