it doesnt answer your question for future Subsonic development or java support - but I did post a reply today on what I did. I updated the system to java 16, but downloaded a stand alone java 8 instance and it exists in the /var/subsonic folder and is only there for subsonic (then did some basic edits to subsonic.sh so it would use its own java 8 instead of the OS's default). Basically I have subsonic carrying along its own java 8 while there rest of the server is on a newer release that will continue to get updates while subsonic is in its own 'bubble'. The post is under the post for error 503 since it appears that error is showing up if you update your java.
